Comment: This was a calligraphy art combo swap. I received plain white papers with names (myself and my boys) written with a marker with no thick and thin lines as seen with calligraphy. The letters were not connected, like elementary printing. The 'art' was dots and dashes of a silver gel pen along with, on some pieces, some tiny, messy, doodled circles which I think were supposed to be planets. Each letter had a partial shadow that didn't really match the letter nor was it a consistent shadow. Her note said (paraphrasing) 'I tried to do calligraphy but it didn't work out. I guess I'm more of a letterer.' But it wasn't nice lettering work either. She also said either in her PM or in her note that she intended to drop this swap but it was too late. I know calligraphy can be surprisingly difficult to learn so I sent a nice PM with some websites with instructions for faux calligraphy. I even sent a the name of a site with calligraphy exemplars she could trace if she wished to resend since what she sent did not satisfy the swap requirements. The coordinator is also in agreement that what she sent doesn't come close to meeting the standard of the swap. Lisa said she would not resend. I appreciate that she meant to drop this but she could have at least done her 'lettering' on some pretty paper or use cursive writing which would have more closely resembled calligraphy and art. Then she wrote back saying she thought the effort should be enough and would I please rate a 5. I replied I wouldn't without a resend which she continues to refuse. Now apparently I'm mean and take this too seriously. I've always rewarded efforts that meet the swap with 5s. Her 'effort' would have taken my 10 yo 5 minutes. I also told her that the rating system means nothing if we don't all use it properly. So I am obliged to rate a 3 as she sent nothing even resembling calligraphy! It doesn't resemble art either but since that is subjective, I'll base it on the lack of calligraphy. I've tried to be fair but she has no intention of trying to make this right.
