Description:

I love dance cards. I have a few original vintage ones, but I'm particularly fond of making them (some as presents, but mainly I make them to sell at fairs and cons).

For this swap you will create one dance card (booklet) for one partner. There is no 'event' title for the front of the card, but it should have the words "Dance Card" on the front cover. You may add more words to the title if you wish to.

Your dance card should include:

  • Front Cover

  • Back Cover

  • At least 3 inside pages (so 6 sides to write on in total).

  • A cord, ribbon or something similar (in any suitable material) connected to the spine of the Dance Card (so that it could be worn on the wrist or attached to a bag or clothing). You could attach a mini pencil or pen as well - but that is sender's choice to include or not.

  • The inside pages should be lined, but do not have to have dance names on (as this is a general dance card and not for a real or specific event, though you could make it for an imaginary ball or dance event).

  • The Dance Card should be approx the size of an ATC (2.5" x 3.5"). Stick as close to that size as possible.

A general steampunk theme, sender's choice on specific steampunk motifs, but it would be nice to check your partner's profile in case there is anything they particularly love or dislike!

A dance card or programme du bal is used by the lady to record the names of the gentlemen with whom she intends to dance each successive dance at a formal dance or ball. Dance Cards may have originated in the 18th century, but their use first became widespread in the 19th century.

A 'real' dance card is typically a booklet with a decorative cover, listing dance titles and the person with whom the woman intended to dance that evening. Usually the cover would display the title and theme of the ball and a decorative cord would be connected by which it could be attached to a lady's wrist, purse or gown (for our steampunk lady - think creatively about the cord or attachment!). Some historical ones were elaborate, even using jewels and precious metals.

Newbies are welcome. A rating of at least 4.9 for everyone else and I will be checking profiles - so please have a well filled out one as not enough info might mean I can't include you in the swap.

EDIT: I've extended the sign up date and send day by 7 days as I've had to move my holiday dates (I'll now be away from 9th - 16th June)

I would like to try this but I am not understanding the "There is no title to the front of the card" as I've looked at several examples of these dance cards on a couple of sites and they do have "titles".

@stlouisphile Most genuine Dance Cards do have titles, but that is because they were for specific Balls or Dance Events.

As this swap is to make a Steampunk Dance Card, it's not for a 'real' event, so doesn't need a title - but you are free to put a title on it if you'd like to.

The only requirement for text on the front of the card for this swap is to have the words "Dance Card" on the front cover - any extra text / titles are fine.

Have just changed that line to : "There is no 'event' title for the front of the card" Hope that helps a bit.

@ixykix Thank you for the info -- I'll think more about this as I don't want to screw it up, LOL.

WHO DO I SEND MY SWAP TOO!!!! QQ

ixykix 06/16/2012 #

@BlueEyesDarkly - the swap sign-up date is the 22nd June, when we get to that date and everyone has signed up, then partners will be allocated and you'll get an email letting you know. You can then check your swap partner on here :)

PangurBan 06/18/2012 #

hey....i was wondering if it HAD to be a booklet or if it could be in another form? I was searching them online and saw a few different formats thanks

ixykix 06/20/2012 #

@PangurBan - the shape of your dance card doesn't need to be traditional, i.e. it doesn't have to be rectangular or square, but needs to follow the swap guidelines above (about covers and numbers of pages etc - just so that we all have the same guidelines to follow). Did you have a particular format in mind? I might be able to adjust the swap criteria to include it?

ixykix 06/20/2012 #

Just to let everyone know - sign up date is 22nd June - but I might be away from my computer on the 23rd, so partners will either be allocated on the 23rd or 24th June (no later).

ixykix 06/24/2012 #

Partners assigned! Have fun!

ixykix 06/26/2012 #

*****PLEASE NOTE: I AM BEING ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL urgently today 26th JUNE - I will try to get this swap sent out on time - but if it is late I'm very sorry and will get it out as soon as possible THANKS ******
