@Toupti you can use washed cotton as well, just making sure that the color is locked in. I used muslin for mine but you can use cheese cloth as well.

Any suggestions for something upcycled for the little charm to weight the end?

I don't do jewelry so I don't have any interesting beads on hand. I was thinking instead of purchasing something I could use something that might otherwise go into the trash. If I can't think of anything, I might just make some little bits out of oven-bake clay.

@KarensMonsters what about small washers or metal papercrafting tags? Something like that? :D
