Description:

I am doing a PhD on The Domestic Soundscape and am really interested in how we hear the sounds around us, or how we describe or think about them. So I decided to set up a swap to see what other people think!

This is intended to be an inexpensive swap; hearts are earned by quality of thought, not necessarily by expensiveness of materials!

How to participate: set aside a day where you will specifically make an effort to listen to the sounds in your everyday environment, and to list all the sounds you like or find interesting that happen during that day.

You will then send this list to your swap partners.

This really can be just a list written in biro on a piece of notepad paper, or a list written on the back of a postcard that seems to 'match' the sounds you've listed in some way or other.

The most important thing is to listen and to find ways of describing the sounds you hear in your day, and to then share them with someone else.

A list might read like this; - the sound of the bubbles filling the glass bottles when I rinsed them for the recycling - the clatter of my pans in the cupboard - the whoosh my Gas cooker made when I lit one of the hobs - the sound of my partner's breathing changing when he fell asleep - a pigeon cooing on the roof and resonating in the chimney

Hopefully what everyone will get out of this is a different insight into someone else's reality, along with the new experience of considering everyday sounds perhaps in a new way.

I will Angel if necessary, but I'd prefer not to be the only one sending out lists of sounds!

Everyone will have 6 swap partners. You can send them all the same list or make up a different one for each partner - as you like. You will earn hearts according to how descriptive you are and how creatively you present your lists.

If you have any questions, do email me!

I really like this idea, I may join, do you list only the sounds we like or some sounds we don't like as well? as I write this I hear the kids running and jumping on the floor above me and its quite annoying day after day from precisly 3:22pm until 9:30pm anywhere I go in my apt. thats what I hear, but if I join this swap I would venture outside, there I find sounds I like!

The swap is for "Sounds I love" and the description says "list all the sounds you like or find interesting". IMHO, this means sounds we find pleasant or unique, rather than disagreeable. Of course, if it is my own children playing above me, and I have a very high threshold for racket, and like the idea that they are close and having fun in spite of it all, the noise might then be classified as "sounds I love"! lol

Felix, would you please clarify for both of us?

Susan 03/19/2008 #

yes, I too, like to hear my child. I also like the sound of breaking glass, the sound, not the result really though but the sound of it is neat to me. this is certainly a unique swap.

Your comments are really interesting; I guess the reason why you like the sounds is up to you. So you could write sounds that you like for their sonic qualities or sounds you like because of their associations.

I personally find the sound of the dishwasher repetitive and waring in some ways, but then it is also a relief when it is on as it means the dishwasher doesn't need loading!

Do you think I need to modify the swap description to reflect this issue of association/sonic qualities? This is my first swap so I'm still learning how to write a useful swap description... thanks for asking such good questions about the swap, Felix

Felix, I think the basic question is whether you want us to describe only sounds that we "like or find interesting" (as per your swap description), or whether we can also include any sounds we hear and choose to make note of. If it is the former, then your swap descoription is fine. If it is the latter, then I think your swap description should be modified to say this as well. Although I am not sure I personally want to get a list of complaints about rackety noises...I liked the idea of describing sounds in a positive sense.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I think the sounds you like and find interesting rule is important because I think it provokes a different, more optimistic engagement with sounds. So the description shall stay as is; any more questions, do contact me...

this sounds like a very interesting swap, but I feel a bit daunted by the number of PCs to send out. I am very keen on the sounds I hear during the day, since I am at home alone, and there is just so many neat interesting and attractive soundsthat i hear. i may join another time when there may be another similar swap, that has a lesser number of postcards necesary to send. Sorry, not this time. BUT... Felix, I would be interested in sending you personally a postcard, since you are the one who is doing the studies on the this. PM me if you'd like me to do this. I would do it as a swap, or just on my own if you like. susi

I have more-or-less the same to say as Susi; I don't trust myself to keep track of all six cards/lists or write them out to my own satisfaction right now, but could surely handle one if you'd like to do a private swap. Please PM me if interested.

Having read the comments and seen how many people signed up to the swap, I changed the number of people to send to down to 2 instead of 6. I hope this doesn't bother anyone... I just felt maybe 6 was going to be a bit too much. I'll be in touch with swap-partners soon! x
