I am doing a PhD on The Domestic Soundscape and am really interested in how we hear the sounds around us, or how we describe or think about them. So I decided to set up a swap to see what other people think! This is intended to be an inexpensive swap; hearts are earned by quality of thought, not necessarily by expensiveness of materials! How to participate: set aside a day where you will specifically make an effort to listen to the sounds in your everyday environment, and to list all the sounds you like or find interesting that happen during that day. You will then send this list to your swap partners. This really can be just a list written in biro on a piece of notepad paper, or a list written on the back of a postcard that seems to 'match' the sounds you've listed in some way or other. The most important thing is to listen and to find ways of describing the sounds you hear in your day, and to then share them with someone else. A list might read like this; - the sound of the bubbles filling the glass bottles when I rinsed them for the recycling - the clatter of my pans in the cupboard - the whoosh my Gas cooker made when I lit one of the hobs - the sound of my partner's breathing changing when he fell asleep - a pigeon cooing on the roof and resonating in the chimney Hopefully what everyone will get out of this is a different insight into someone else's reality, along with the new experience of considering everyday sounds perhaps in a new way. I will Angel if necessary, but I'd prefer not to be the only one sending out lists of sounds! Everyone will have 6 swap partners. You can send them all the same list or make up a different one for each partner - as you like. You will earn hearts according to how descriptive you are and how creatively you present your lists.
