For this swap, you will make 1 ATC for 1 swap partner.

The subject will be a vintage lady of African American decent.

You may use original or reproduction/printed photography for this swap.

The rules for this ATC swap:

  • standard ATC size 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches

  • sturdy construction required - meaning at least heavy cardstock, if not cardboard; you may also use ATC size mini-canvas on wood if you want but that's obviously up to you

  • the era for this swap will be anything WWII or earlier

  • you must embellish this ATC with something appropriate for the lady in your photograph - whether this is feathers, lace, faux pearls/rhinestones or a fabric

  • if available, please add the name, date and location of the subject in the photograph

  • you may add a funny quip or inspirational quote, but this is not required

Please make this your best work - this swap is a test for what I'm hoping we'll be able to turn into a series for Black History Month.

Sender's choice but you must send clean artwork.

You're so welcome - I honestly have NEVER found any so far. I go to handful of flea markets and antiques malls, and several of them have quite a large collection of ephemera like old photographs - but I can honestly say I've NEVER seen one where the subject was an African American person. After my Google search, I'm even more surprised that I've never come across them - there are some amazing, gorgeous ones online! I really hope we can get some good participation on this swap and see what everyone comes up with :)

Yes, online is the best resource lots of variety but there is nothing like the real photo. At a flea market I once found a gorgeous 5x7 photo of an african american-woman from the 20s. The photo was taken by a New York photographer. I had it on my desk at work. Everyone thought she was perhaps a relative of mine. I never said any different. : ) That was several years ago . . . can't find it now, I hope it turns up.

I hope so too - it sounds amazing. In all my years of treasure hunting I can honestly say that I've NEVER seen a single vintage/antique picture featuring an African American person. EVER. I'm definitely going to have to make it a point to see if I can find some now - although living on the Gulf Coast, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it's probably unlikely. Makes me miss living in a big city!
