Matthew 6 is a continuation of Jesus’ sermon on the mount. In this chapter He especially emphasized the blessings that come from putting the Lord first in our lives and worshiping Him because we love Him—not because we want others to think we are righteous. The counsel in verses 25–34 was especially for the newly-called Apostles, and although this specific counsel may not be for all of us, each Church member can apply the principles taught in those verses. Matthew 6:1-4...What is alms giving? Where and how should we give alms? Matthew 6:5-13...Why do we not pray for others to see? How does this affect public prayers, in church, for instance? How does the Lord's prayer have meaning today? Matthew 6: 14, 15...Why must we forgive? Matthew 6:16-18...What do these verses say about fasting? How should we fast? Matthew 6: 19-21...What type of treasures should we seek for? How do we do this and why? Matthew 6:22-24 What happens if we have an eye single? What does it mean? (See D&C 4) What if we don't have an eye single to the glory of God? Matthew 6:25-33 What do these 9 verses tell us? Why are we not to worry about these things? What is the message in Matthew 6:34? What was similar in the counsel Jesus gave about giving alms, praying and fasting? What do we learn from this repeated idea about what Jesus considers to be true righteousness? How could Jesus' counsel in Matthew 6:19-23,33 help solve the problem in verse 24? What did Jesus promise to those who chose him as their Master? (Matthew 6:20, 22, 33) How do you think your study of Matthew 6 will help guide your life? Which verse(s) are your favorite or affected you the most? |
