Description:

I love to knit lace shawls as gifts, but some of the most popular shawls use only 550yds to 700yds of yarn, leaving plenty left from a typical 100g or 4oz skein. So this swap is for enough lace weight yarn to knit a little shawl like Kiri or Swallowtail: a minimum of 550yds to 700yds or 2oz (56g) of lace weight yarn.

Lace weight yarn can be anything from fingering to cobweb, so, as a rough guideline, if you choose fingering (220yds/50g) weight, you should send at least 150g or 660yds; and if you choose cobweb (1500yds/100g) weight, you should send at least 2oz or 840yds.

Please send nice natural fibers like merino, silk or even cashmere blends, no acrylics or synthetics, not even artificial silk (rayon/vicose), although seasilk and soysilk is fine (ask your partner if in doubt). You can send appropriate leftovers from your previous projects, or coned yarn wind-offs, but please label the yarn information clearly.

If you choose to send an appropriate size needle, please send one that is specifically recommended for lace knitting (sharp tips, smooth joins and flexible cord). If you don't enjoy knitting lace with it neither will your partner.

You may suggest or send a pattern, but please do not violate copyright.

Required minimum cost of yarn (plus needle, if any) excluding postage, is US$15. Lace weight yarn is light enough for international airmail not to cost much.

This is my first swap and I want it to work, so no one with a rating of less than 4.5 will be allowed to join. This means no newbies. If you feel you have been rated unfairly, contact me. If you join please play fair and send your partner something nice that you would want to knit yourself.

Whimper this is just the kind of swap I would love but I have only been in two swaps so far. And the one that is finished I did not get rated for :( dorothy in wyoming

Dorothy,

contact me via swap-bot, telling me about yourself and why you promise you will not flake. You see, I intend to send a parcel myself to anyone who doesn't receive one, and I did rather it doesn't become necessary.

Newbies,

you are welcomed to join in but you must message me first ok?

This is wonderful! I am just getting into lace knitting and I love the idea of a high quality swap like this. I have a question - would you be willing to move the "send" date to the 15th or so? I have to mail order everything - there isn't a yarn store within two hours of that (that is both good and bad LOL) and I want to buy the yarn when I know the person's color likes, etc. I would prefer to pay normal shipping to get it to me rather than 3 day or overnight (which is outrageously expensive). Another week to 10 days would make all of that possible. :)

Hi Windchimes,

I have moved the sent date so it's a month from the beginning, giving us all plenty of time not only to mail order but also to knit up a quickie shawl from our current lace weight stash, and then sent the leftovers! It's so sweet of you to want to order something nice, but you can send something partial but nice from your stash ... like I said, I find most small shawls use only half of a 100g lace weight hank.

I hope you run this swap again at some point! I have no leftover lace yarn on hand, and am in the midst of far too many projects to get anything done in the next month, but I just wanted to say this is a FABULOUS swap idea.

Windchimes 03/21/2007 #

I unfortunately do not have any left over as the lace knitting is new to me. So whoever I get will get something brand new. :)

I am trying to define what a mini lace shawl pattern is (as opposed to a regular shawl). do you have a link to a pattern that I could use an example? I think I know what you mean but I want to be sure.

Jensenaddict 03/24/2007 #

Windchimes,

an example of a mini shawl would be Kiri (google Kiri). Ok, Dorothy, you have got a rating of 1, and we have several participants who are newbies. I decided not to drop any but please fulfil your commitments ok? This is my first swap, I want it to work, please play and be nice.

Windchimes mentioned wanting to know likes and dislikes. I think that is a marvelous idea. I'm not sure if we're keeping our swapees a secret, so this is a general "hey everyone, can you please post if there are any particular colour loves or hates?"
Thanks, FJ ps. I'm not thrilled with 70s kitchen colours (think avocado green, harvest gold, etc), but even if I receive said colours, I could knit for someone else, so not to worry too much.

spinjenny 03/29/2007 #

I agree with FJ. I put my colour preferences in my Profile. As I often knit for gifts, I can use most colours, but I wouldn't really enjoy knitting with my least favourites (the sludgy colours). My yarn is packaed up and ready to go to the post office tomorrow or Saturday.

Sorry I have not gotten back to my partner or marked my things as sent earlier. I finially got to borrow a freinds laptop to get caught up as my system died at the beginning of last month :(

I haven't yet received anything, but as I see my partner is the coordinator, and that she lives in Singapore, I'm not worried...:D

I love swap-bot but I sometimes wish there was a better way of viewing partners you send to, people in the swap, and who the person is that is sending you stuff.

Perhaps I should hike on over to the swap-bot feedback forum and talk about it over there, huh... :)

For all its faults, I've having a blast with swap-bot.
