Description:

The long awaited culture swap.. someone had to do it! READ CAREFULLY!

Swap-bot is primarily Americans (US), so some of you will get paired up with Americans. To make it interesting, the item list for Americans (US) is differnt than the item list for other countries. Please read carefully...

IF YOU LIVE IN THE US, YOU WILL SEND

1). A postcard from your area

2). A letter to your partner talking about your native heritage... For example, my husband's aunts and uncles are Amish.. I might write a little bit about Amish culture since that influences my life greatly.. Or I'm Sicilian, so I might write a little bit about how being Italian American has changed my life! (it hasn't changed my life much, but we do have certain rituals that have come over from the old country!)

3). A gift from your culture... For Example, I might send out an Amish doll or a package of ziti... or maybe a CD of great Italian hits! Be Creative!

4). Something that is manufactured close to home.. I live right outside of the Smoky Mountains, so I could send out a plush black bear with a Great Smoky Mountains T-shirt!

5). AND finally A picture of something that you can only find in your area... Intrigue people to come visit your town! For Example: I'll probably take a picture of the Smoky Mountains.

IF YOU LIVE IN A COUNTRY OTHER THAN AMERICA, YOU WILL SEND:

1). A postcard from your area

2). A letter to your partner talking about your country... For Example: If you live in Germany you might write about it's beautiful landscapes and different celebrations!

3). A gift from your country... For Example: if you live in Belgium you might send Belgian chocolates.. Try to make sure if there is writing on the gift that it is written in your native language.. it adds to the excitement!

4). Something that is manufactured close to home.. For Example: If you live in Peru you could send an Alpaca Bear!

5). AND finally a coin or piece of paper currency from your country.. it doesn't have to be a lot of money - just something for your partner to look at and enjoy!

Everyone's invited! Newbies will have to contact me before they join... International (obviously!).. ... Try to make the package cost at least $10 before shipping.. but try not to go over $30. Enjoy this swap and let me know if there are any questions!

CLARIFICATION - By using the term "Americans" and "America", I'm not referring to North America, I'm referring to the United States of America. If you live in Canada or Mexico, you live in a country that is not American... Some people were asking, so I figured I'd straighten it out! Thanks!

Hi! Sounds like a grrreat swap!

Maybe you could just switch the swap description to say if you live "in the U.S." instead of "America."

I think people in Canada and Mexico might feel more welcome if you write it that way, since they do live in America. And it will eliminate any possible confusion too. : )

Hiya Shnook!

I LOVE this swap. As a cultural anthropology/cultural studies major, I love the idea of learning about other cultures with "hands on" items. Thanks for the great idea!

PS: I live in the Smokies also..well in Knoxville, TN so "howdee neighbor"! Cheers, Kimberly aka SassyBird

Oh dear..I just noticed that it is too late to sign up...will you do another round, PLEASE?!? PLEASE!! PLEASE!!!

Liseanne27 05/29/2007 #

I would lust like to say, I love the internet. I am finding some very interesting things for this swap on the other side of the country (US), such as from a farm 2 miles from where I grew up. This should be cool!

blackbiscuits - your package in the mail from the USA

irisheye 06/15/2007 #

Umm... I thought this swap had to be in the mail by July something... what happened to the dates?!

HappyCactus 06/15/2007 #

why did the send by date change?! Bunnycutie - your package will be send late...I'm sorry...I'll let you know as soon as I mail it...sorry again, but I thought the send by date was in July 1st.

Starwatcher 06/15/2007 #

I'm glad it wasn't just me! I too had noted that this was to be sent by July 1 - which would not have been a problem for me since I have been putting together parts of the package - but TODAY - there is no way it can be sent today. My letter is in another computer which is temporarily disconnected since we are replacing the carpeting in that room and I don't have the time to pull the information together again today. Sorry Cathy, this one will be a bit late.

How weird... Where is the coordinator?

user7350 06/16/2007 #

I received the email today letting me know that i was late; in fact i did put the date of July 15 in my calendar ; I am in france right now; how come the date has changed from July to June 15??

abendbrot 06/16/2007 #

I also got an email saying that the swap deadline had changed. I had it written down as July 1st. I hope my swap partner won't be too upset that this package will go out late, due to this apparent deadline change!

user7099 06/16/2007 #

phew! That scared me for a second. Can we just still plan on July 1st as the deadline?

Amberly 06/16/2007 #

Sounds good to me as I am not ready to mail. Has anyone heard from the coordinator?

Chic 06/17/2007 #

graphics_cactus - So sorry, I missed the deadline totally, I had the 30th of June in my head.. sooooo sorry! Today it´s my daughter´s b-day, but I promise to send it out to you first thing tomorrow!

Chic 06/17/2007 #

Oh realize now that it actually wasn´t the 15th that was a deadline.. so.. what date is it now?

NadKnitBlog 06/17/2007 #

hello, i too had noted the deadline as july 1st- i am now putting it all together so i can post it first thing tomorrow morning and kellie, it will be with you in about a week. i had no idea the deadline changed- i only had my final exam on thursday and thought i still had two weeks to get it done, sorry!!

cranialbleeding 06/17/2007 #

Chic 06/18/2007 #

Thank you so much SimplyShnookly for your lovely package full of great things! It was a nice surprise! You live in a beautiful place!

Starwatcher 06/29/2007 #

Cathy, your package will be mailed tomorrow from regon, so it shouldn't take too long to get to you! Sorry you thought you were being "stiffed" - the original send by date on this swap was July 1st and Simply Shnookly had confirmed that in an email to me on 6/17/07. Hopefully you will change my rating when my package to you arrives.

Received my package today from Snaughty Girl and it contained some awesome items, a tin of my favorite tea, a pretty post card, candy:), a 50 pence coin, and a piece of glass from a local artist. See the picture I loaded in the gallery!
