Description:

Using the folding technique demonstrated in the links below, we are going to create mixed media, self-mailing, fold-a-notes. The paper is going to be folded in such a way that it will become its own envelope. These are also known as "Mennonite envelopes".

How to Fold

So! Here's a run-down of what you'll do for this swap:

  1. Take a letter sized book or magazine page (something not flimsy) and on at least one side (what will end up being the inside) paint, stencil, splatter, scribble, stamp using whatever tools you like. You can do both sides of the paper if you want, but only one side is required. If you don't have a magazine or book page that you feel is strong enough, you can use an 8.5" x 11" piece of scrapbook paper.

  2. When you're done prepping your page, fold it using the instructions linked above.

  3. Once your page is folded you'll have creases to use as guides. Go back, and focusing on what will be the inside of your envelope, add more artwork. We are aiming to make little vignettes, like so. You will have a large rectangular area in which you can make a scene. It can be collage, drawing, stamping, calligraphy, whatever you wish (sender's choice). You can use the other spaces around this to say hello to your partner, if you wish.

  4. When you are done with the inside, fold the page back into an envelope, seal, address & stamp it. It's ready to mail!

Please feel free to add some extra adhesion to the outside to help your fold-a-note stay closed. An artfully placed sticker or 2, address label, collage or bit of washi tape will do the trick. Do not cover it in tape - these are not meant to be torn open like typical envelopes.

Clear as mud? I've done this before, so I'm biased by having practiced this already. Please, if something can be made more clear, just let me know.
