Paint on Paper Towel ATC: ATC Workshop Book Techni

My backgrounds are made and now I need to finish them off. Due to humidity mine took three days to dry! My layers were thick though.

Note I am doing a series of these swaps and so far have three listed with a staggering date of one week apart. Everyone keep an eye out for the other swaps I am hosting.

I don't know if you've realized but by clicking on someone's profile in the right area of the page it shows all the swaps they are hosting. That might be an easy way to find the other ATC workshop swaps I'm hosting.

Tonight I worked on and totally finished three. This was fun and I am excited.

I did the background as stated in the directions and they are pink and other light pastel colors. I collaged an image on top. I used silver embossing powder all around the edge. They are Marilyn Monroe photos (I love her) and I think they came out great. The silver with the pink tones looks terrific.

The hard part was coming up with a nice image to collage on top. I have no clue what I'll use for the other ATCs.

My daughter and I worked on this technique as well as the other 2 that are being offered on Swap-bot. I will be honest and say that I liked this one the least. I found the papertowel to be a bit difficult to work with. It would be really helpful if the book stated the exact products used. sigh. I hope my partners like theirs.

KVDesigns what products are you curious about? Paints? Gel mediums?

I use Golden brand acrylic gel medium in soft, either gloss or matte, I go back and forth.

My thing with these backgrounds was it took a lot of gel medium to keep them stuck down. Some of them took four days to dry out completely.

Some of the backgrounds are thick. The surface is also nearly impossible to rubber stamp upon, if the layers were made with torn and layered pieces not just a single layer, I found.

I use mod-podge for paper (with the blue label) in matte finish for all my tissue paper, paper towel, paper napkin, and tea bag attaching. Works great and I get it at Michael's with a 40% off coupon.

I have had no luck finding Lumiere paint -- wouldn't you know that Michaels doesn't carry it any more -- if you use regular acrylic paint, will it work with this technique if you use the right gel medium (and if so, which one works well?)?

I don't much like the color quality of the other fabric paints I've found, so if it's possible to make a nicer acrylic paint work, I'd rather do that.

I did use Jacquard's store locator on their website and found one store near me that carries Lumiere; sadly, though, I didn't find the store locator online until 4:22 and the store closes at 4 on Saturdays. It's not open on Sunday, either.

and now I'm hoping, after reading the comments, that the paint will dry by the 12th!

Hi Sacratomato, I use plain old, cheap, three for a dollar acrylics for this and they work fine. I do have real artist's acrylics, but I haven't used them for this. I also haven't had a problem with drying. The mod-podge matte for paper dries pretty quick..It is the one with the blue label.

A little late i know, but the Lumiere paints are in with the fabric paint in AC Moore. No where in the book does it say that it's a textile paint, that little hint of info would have made them easier to find. I'm finishing up my last set of cards so i can mail them monday to my partners.

I don't know if you have one nearby but, I've also seen the Lumiere paint at Joann's etc, it's stocked over by the fabric paint, . I didn't find in their online store though.

I'm pretty sure Lumiere makes paint that is not textile paint as well. I figured that was what the book was talking about.

Hi all My cards will be sent on time, I have had a bit of trouble with the finishing touches, drying time more than I suspected it would be, but I will mail on the due date, tuesday. this was fun! Sage

I did my ATCs yesterday (Sunday) and yes, the drying at each stage took longer than I anticipated. But it was fun. Mine will go postal tomorrow to my partners.

Cards went out to Cazr and Brooke today...

Some of mine were made with alcohol ink on paper towel. Some were made with watercolor paint on paper towel. Some were made with left over Easter Egg dye on paper towel (made back at Easter then saved to use them later).

I could not find Lumiere at my local AC Moore. I did find it at a rubbber stamp shop but it was too expensive for me to buy at full retail. I am going to recheck AC Moore now that you said that, and also Joanne's, both places have a 40 or 50% off coupon that I could use.

I finished my cards, I used liquid metallic watercolor paint on the paper towels and mod podge to stick the pieces to the cards. I thought the cards dried rather quickly, I did them in the evening and they were dry by the next morning. I did enjoy using this technique and can see myself using it again.

My cards made it in the mail! whew! I had a bit of a setback this morning with my cat getting on my craft table and scattered my cards all dried and ready to go, onto a babywipe i had used and was still wet, so a couple of them got wet and I had to blow dry them to put them in the mail! lol but they made it..

my cards are finally in the mail today... i also had a hard time with this technique and altered it a litte to get some results i liked!! i used regular acrylic paints that were metallic that i got at joannes, they drying time wasn't so bad... i also finished one of my cards with a top coat of diamond glaze... and it gave a very pretty shiny finish that i wanted!! hope Artistic and ChristineMM enjoy their cards :)

Cindy your ATCs arrived. I really love them. I agree with you about these taking up a lot of gel medium. One other problem I had with mine is that I had to use so much gel medium that some of them curled up a bit, they were on 140 lb. watercolor paper. I like the look of these but the drying time of 3-4 days for mine is a bit much, also. So between the long time to dry, the possible curling factor and the expense of the gel medium I probably won't do this technique frequently.

ChristineMM, Thanks for the wonderful ATCs. I love the embossing idea. I will try that the next time.

I bought the Lumiere paint to use on my cards. The paper towel really soaked it up so I didn't have to use very much of the gel medium. I loved the results of this technique but it was a little time consuming.

My cards finally went out yesterday morning. Thank you to my partners for being so understanding about the lateness (multiple family issues that ended up spilling over into this week, etc.).

I ended up finding Lumiere paints at an AWESOME local art supply store. I am glad I had gone to the Jacquard site and found the name and address of this store, because they have an incredible supply of paints, inks, pencils, pens, etc. etc. etc., and an even more incredible supply of fantastic art papers. But I digress.

The two sets of ATCs I've gotten so far have looked completely different from my final Lumiere-painted product. It's been interesting to see how different they are. I ended up being a little flummoxed by how to handle the backgrounds I made, as I'm not much into collage (thankfully, I did get the gel medium mentioned in the Techniques book; this stuff is fantastic for collage). The backgrounds were really imposing so they did call for something like collage so the background wouldn't end up being the final image. I'm not sure if I like the ATCs I produced.

Anyway, all that gel medium and the paints did take some time to dry, and then had some curling issues, so I had to weight it all under a heavy book with dumbells atop it all. It WAS time-consuming and I really, really, really wish I had taken Christine's advice to allow plenty of time to make these ATCs.
