About This Swap

This is the FIFTH ATC swap in this series based on the techniques taught in Bernie Berlin’s book “Artist Trading Cards Workshop: Create, Collect, Swap published in December 2006 by North Light Publishers. This time we will try the technique “Gesso and Magazine Images featured on page 28-29. The necessary ingredients for this swap are: magazine images, gel medium, scissors, gesso, acrylic paint and/or opaque markers.

Who Can Join

Now the rules for who can join. Due to problems with “flakers on Swap-bot I have tightened my hosting requirements which as resulted in a very high compliance rate (hooray). I will not accept newbies to Swap-bot (sorry)---you must have at least three ratings in your file to join--there are many ATC swaps for newbies that you can join in order to get rated by your swap partners. A person can have no more than one “no sends on their file. The minimum rating is 4.7. As host I also can choose to ban anyone for any other reason that I see fit, that is my right.

General Info

You may join one or all of the swaps in this series, it is up to you.

If you already own this book by Bernie Berlin, perhaps you are itching to try some new techniques. Maybe you would like to see how others interpret this technique, so let’s swap ATCs with each other.

And if you don’t yet own this book and you want to learn some new and interesting techniques then perhaps you’d consider buying the book and joining our swap!

Before you commit to this swap please already own the book or have access to a copy from your library. Make sure you have the necessary tools and ingredients on hand before the swap closes. It would not be fair to sign up then not make the ATCs and say “I don’t own the book or the right materials.

Due to the nature of this book being copyrighted and the fact that the whole book is based on teaching the reader art techniques I do not feel comfortable posting the full directions of this technique online as it could very well be against the law (a copyright violation).

The book is fantastic. If you don’t yet own it, you can purchase this book online through big bookseller sites or see if your local craft store or rubber stamp store is selling it. The ISBN-10 is 1581808488 and the ISBN-13 is 139781581808483. The book was published in the United State of America. I have no idea what the availability of this book is to foreign countries, but the swap is open to International members so long as you have the book and the materials and want to participate. (Someone told me that anyone can buy online from book vendors but will just pay more in shipping fees.)

Please allow ample time to make these ATCs. I have found through my own experience that when learning a new technique and when using new materials mistakes abound and errors are bound to happen in the experimentation process. So please give yourself enough time to make these ATCs so you can send out high quality work as well as send the ATCs out by the deadline.

The date to send the swap by is a rule of this swap. Please follow the rules.

Now that the rules are out of the way I wish you luck and fun while trying this technique.

If you want to read more about this book I have published a book review of it on my blog which you can read here.

I got this book from an Australian online bookstore: http://www.fishpond.com.au/advancedsearchresult.php?keywords=1581808488+&cat=all&x=0&y=0&ref=134

This sounds more like an advertisement to sell your book than a fun swap. I already have the materials, but decline.

vintagepix 07/11/2007 #

I just wanted to respond to tannermom's comment - Christine is not the author of the book being used, and this is a great idea for a swap! I wish I could sign up for all these Bernie Berlin ATC workshop-themed swaps but have to choose one a month due to other obligations.

I love doing these swaps. It's fun to learn the new techniques along with everyone else.

I've had this book for a few months now and I love it! In fact, I have already tried this technique on two ATC's. They were tons of fun and I loved how they turned out. I've been wanting to make more. Thanks for the great idea! :)

Carolyn B thank you for standing up for me that I am not the author of the book. I am not Bernie Berlin. My description clearly states who the author is, Bernie Berlin.

First I had asked on the forums here if anyone wanted to do swaps based on these techniques and many said yes, including some private PM's that I received.

I made some of the other techniques on my own before hosting swaps for them. But I was not able to see what other people came up with for ideas for the same techiques.

It has been fun to have these as a challenge with a deadline and to see the work that other people do with what is the same technique--everyone's work is so different, it is amazing. I had thought we'd all do nearly the same things but I was wrong. The first three swaps were actually techniques for making the backgrounds only. These next two swaps are for the actual whole design of the ATC itself.

I picked up a free magazine at my public library which will be the source of my magazine images for these two magazine source swaps.

I am busy this summer with summer fun with my family. I have slowed down on my ATC making to just these two swaps. I am not checking in to Swap-bot nearly so often as I was before.

Have fun everyone!!

ChristineMM 07/21/2007 #

I hope everyone is having fun with this technique, and having a fun summer also.

I have been 'practicing' this technique and have found it to be pretty fun...but...I wish I had taken a picture of the image before I started since it now looks nothing like the original. Just a heads up. :-)

FarStarr 08/ 4/2007 #

I'm having a lot more fun with this than I thought..wheeee!

ChristineMM 08/ 6/2007 #

Partners have been assigned. I hope everyone is having fun with this swap. :)

alteredtome 08/ 6/2007 #

I really enjoyed this technique so much I ended up making MANY more than I needed for the swap.

MookieFairstone 08/ 7/2007 #

Poggy123 and laury55, your ATCs are on the way.

laury55 08/ 7/2007 #

thanks mookie...I'll let you know when they arrive

BetsyG 08/ 8/2007 #

Melanie and ChristineMM, your cards went out in the mail yesterday afternoon. Let me know when you get them.

wiccked 08/10/2007 #

I'm still working on mine! I've been in bed for a week with the flu, but I did get two cards made (yes, in a whole week!) so far, and I was really surprised with the way they turned out. They weren't at all what I had planned, but I'm quite pleased by them, and looking forward to finishing off the others!

(This is really unlike me - I usually have my swaps all ready to go by swapping date!)

ChristineMM 08/13/2007 #

Melanie, I hope you feel better. I am usually done with my ATCs by the swap assignment of partners date, but not lately due to many reasons!

FarStarr 08/15/2007 #

Cards are on their way to Reb and KVDesigns!

wiccked 08/15/2007 #

mine got posted this morning, and thanks Christine, I am starting to feel more human again, finally!

laury55 08/22/2007 #

posted mine today to betsy & poggy123...allow them time to arrive as I live overseas

ChristineMM 08/24/2007 #

The deadline is tomorrow. I hope everyone is having fun.

I have to finish mine up tonight and plan to get them out on time.

Moominbrooke 08/24/2007 #

Intriguing technique! The murkiness of the gesso-ed images work on the subconscious and who knows what may occur.

ChristineMM 08/25/2007 #

Melanie in Australia and Brooke in CA your ATCs went out today from me on the East Coast of USA. I hope you like them!

ChristineMM 08/26/2007 #

Today I tried to upload a scan of one of my ATCs that I swapped out. It doesn't appear to have worked. I tried twice. Oh well.

I hope everyone had fun with this swap.

If you want to peek at my ATCs I am going to upload scans to my blog this afternoon.

Thanks for playing in the swap!

Artistic 08/26/2007 #

Very strange ATCs are headed out to my partners in Colorado and Florida. This technique was ... interesting :|

ChristineMM 09/ 6/2007 #

Two things from your hostess:

  1. Please take the time to rate the swappers who sent you ATCs. (Some of my recipients are not rating me so I know some of you are not doing ratings.)

  2. If anyone was flaked upon for this swap please PM me with the person's name. I want to ban anyone from my future swaps who flakes on past swaps of mine.

Thanks.
