Description:

Are you vegan or vegan-curious? Are you a crafter? Then this is the swap for you!

You'll be sending your partner (at least):

2 skeins of yarn, at least one wound into a Magic Yarn Ball with accompanying goodies

1 recipe

You have a choice between two themes – fall/autumn (Hot coco, warm soups/stews, reds, golds, browns, etc...) or Halloween (pumpkin recipes, candy, spiders, witches, orange and black, etc.). Your package must contain 2 skeins of yarn, with at least one wound into a magic yarn ball (though you’re welcome to do both). You also must include a recipe (vegan of course). Try to tie your recipe, yarn, and trinkets into your chosen theme. Maybe even tell a story. Get as creative as you want.

The point is to learn about or share veganism and make new friends! The price range is a value of $25-30 (but items from your stash are fine as long as they're good as new), not including shipping, and this swap is open to all (international or not) who will follow the basic rule: everything sent must be vegan! Please also join our blog, I'll send an invite to all who sign up. If you have 2 or more no sends, contact me directly before signing up, please.

What a neat swap! Makes me wish I was a knitter! :)

Chickpea - You don't have to be a knitter! Crocheters and anyone else who uses yarn are welcome too. Just make sure to mention that when you sign up and hopefully your pal will customize your ball for you. Our last VeganPal wasn't specifically a Yarn Ball, so if you don't do anything with yarn, keep an eye out for the next VeganPal. =)

Can you explain what a magic ball is, please?

deceptivelypackaged 07/31/2007 #

A magic yarn ball is basically fun stuff hidden in a ball of yarn.

I am vegan but alas! I do not use yarn... yet

lol

=^_^= Have fun with the swap (thanks for making it vegan!)

Chickpea, I had a non-knitter in the magic yarn ball swap I hosted! Their partner used ribbon instead. <3

Tip: There are some really excellent vegan fibers out there these days. Bamboo yarn is pretty soft, and Banana yarn is glossy, like silk! Soy silk is OK, but I find it's too slippery to spin, so i don't know how it is as a yarn. And of course, cotton is a good ol' standby.

I'm not going to sign up for this one just yet, mainly because the main fibers in my yarn arsenal are animal fibers, and I don't know when or if I'll be at a quality yarn shop during the swap dates.

Sounds like a fun swap....can't wait to start

Tricotine 08/19/2007 #

I am so-o-o ready to start! :-)

ok, so I'm a total meativore.. but I love this swap anyways. I'll send you a vegan recipe and vegan yarn, that's cool. I've got nothing against vegans... so long as they know that they should tell the restaurant in advance that they're vegan... you guys know that right? Don't just show up and go, oh by the way, I'm vegan, make me dinner and it better be good... those are the only ones I hate. But people with heavy-duty allergies should know that too... and they rarely do.

okyourturn 08/20/2007 #

i'm surprised there are so many vegans on this site. that's awesome :D sheecooks: i always tell restaurants i'm allergic to dairy, that way they know not to put anything in it i wouldn't eat. it's just easier than saying i'm vegan and maybe having someone not understand and give me dairy anyways. :) have you actually had someone come into your restaurant and say "i'm vegan, cook me something, and it better be good"?? that's kinda crazy :)

Hi everyone, I'm new to this and I'm looking forward to learning alot from you all. My dh was raised vegetarian and has recently showed signs of returning to this lifestyle. I've been exposed to some vegan/vegetarian info and dishes but look forward to learning more. I'd also like to join the blog too ~ want to get in on the contest too.

Well, off now to do more reading and research so I can put together a really wonderful package for my partner. ;D

My secret pal sent me some more questions to answer on this thread... Pardon the brief hijacking!

  1. Who is your hero and why?
Whoever invented sports bras. Because they're comfy.

  2. If you could travel to anywhere, money is no object, where would you go and why? Somewhere mountainous (Colorado, Scotland, heck even Vermont), for the view.

  3. If you could live in any time period, when would you live, and why? If you mean in the sense of an alternate universe, then any time when GWBush was never/never would be president. Other than that, probably now.

  4. If you had to choose five things (not people nor pets) that you absolutely could not live without, what would they be and why? yarn, needles, camera, paper, pen. I'm a knitter and I like to keep a record of things.

  5. Name something: a) that you are passionate about -- Changing the way birth is viewed in this country. b) that brings you joy -- finding things out. c) that makes you sad -- lonliness. d) that upsets you -- injustice. e) that inspires hope -- springtime.

Alright, there it is. Now back to the regular thread.
