Description:

Over the past months I've enjoyed photographing nature for various swaps: flowers, trees, birds, bees, fruits, and vegetables. Now I'm pointing my camera at things built by humans, and I thought that architecture photos might be a stimulating subject for an ATC swap. Are you in?

You'll send 2 ATCs to each of 3 partners [6 ATCs total]. The basis of each ATC should be a piece of architecture photographed by you. Let's consider "architecture" to be any structure or arrangement of space made by humans: buildings, bridges, towers, tunnels, etc. (This list is meant to be suggestive rather than comprehensive, so feel free to construe "architecture" broadly.) And your photo can be a close-up picture of a detail or a full-view picture of an entire structure--or anything in-between.

If you'd like, you can digitally alter your photos, back them with cardstock, or embellish them in other ways. But that's not absolutely necessary: altering, backing, and embellishing aren't requirements for this swap.

Fine print: 1) Newbies with completed profiles are welcome. 2) Swappers with a rating below 4.8 (rounding to the nearest tenth) will be dropped before partners are assigned. 3) This is an international swap.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and remember to have fun!

Hey beckra! This was on my list of Photo ATC's to host..Great minds think alike ;)...I'm in!

ladydy5 09/12/2007 #

I checked your photos and they are very, very good. Can you tell me what kind of a camera you have. I have a Canon digital and have a hard time getting clear upclose photos.

beckra 09/12/2007 #

Hello, Ladydy5! Thanks for looking at my photos & your kind words about them! I use a Canon PowerShot S3 IS--I actually bought it after other people on swapbot mentioned that they had had good luck with it, especially with close-ups. And then my spouse liked mine so much that he bought one of his own--how's that for an endorsement?

beckra 09/12/2007 #

Hey, FarStarr--If architecture photos were on both of our minds, surely that's a good sign that the time is right for this swap!

spinjenny 09/12/2007 #

Is it OK to print them on an inkjet or do they have to be commercially printed? If the inkjet is OK, should they be sprayed with fixative and if so is Krylon Crystal Clear OK? Is a matte finish preferable? Any other suggestions?

Sorry for all the questions but, as you can probably tell, I haven't made a photographic ATC yet. :-)

blushingapples 09/12/2007 #

this is so neat! I love looking at different architectural buildings or homes in other cities or countries. This swap is such a good idea :D I am an ameture photographer, I will try my best, looking forward this fun swap! :D

When I do my photo ATC's I do have them professionally printed only because I find that the ones I print at home tend to stay tacky for quite a while. I have good luck with www.pephoto.com. It takes a while to upload, but I don't have to leave the house, they come in the mail. The quality is great and the price is right..only 8 cents for a 4x6. If I need pictures in a hurry, I pay 17 cents each at Sam's Club.

beckra 09/12/2007 #

Dear spinjenny--Hello! Printing on an inkjet is fine, and if you want to spray the finished project with a protective coating, I'm sure that would be appreciated, but I wouldn't say it's absolutely necessary. As for the finish, matte or glossy is okay--whatever seems best to you. In general, whatever you do will be okay as long as you're using a photo you took as the main element of the ATC--the rest really is up to your discretion. Feel free, though, to ask more questions: I & others will be happy to chime in!

Thanks for joining us, blushing.apples!

spinjenny 09/12/2007 #

Well, I am in the UK, but I am sure I can find similar online places here. I have never tried getting digital photographs professionally printed, so it will be another swap-bot-initiated learning experience. :-)

AliceAtTheBeach 09/16/2007 #

I would like to join in on this swap. I have never made an ATC but I am good with my camera.Tell me a little about how to make an ATC. Thanks.

beckra 09/16/2007 #

Hello, Alice At The Beach, and welcome! I've just sent you a PM with some more info, but basically all you need to do is crop or digitally resize a photo you've taken to ATC size (2.5 x 3.5 inches).... If you go to www.flickr.com and search for "photo ATC," you can see a variety of things that people do when turning their photos into ATCs. As long as your ATC is 2.5 x 3.5 and uses a photo you've taken, you're in the clear--so click away with your camera, exercise your own taste and judgement, and have fun!

My first ATC swap...I'm nervous ;P I have done serveral photo/postcard swaps and I think I'm ready. I'm excited about this one.

beckra 09/27/2007 #

Welcome, sweet1! Glad to have you "on board"!

spoonergregory 10/ 2/2007 #

spinjenny - I always use Photobox (www.photobox.co.uk), they're quite cheap, with next day delivery (if you order in the morning) and I've always had great results from them! They were in the Guardian this weekend as one of the best online photo printers in the UK.

CARROLL 10/ 7/2007 #

Everything's assembled and ready to go out with Monday's mail. Off to Maryland, Tennessee, and Kansas.

charlottenc 10/ 8/2007 #

Just to say my cards are finished and in the mailbox. Not quite in the mail as it's Columbus Day, so no mail pick-up today. Hope my partners like them. This was a really fun ATC challenge! I got to use some of my more esoteric photos :) I like taking pics of things here in my hometown and getting to share them with others = priceless (as the TV commercial says).

FarStarr 10/13/2007 #

Cards are on the way to beckra, carroll, and jen.

ChristineMM 10/21/2007 #

I finished mine after the mail pick up on Sat morning so mine will go out with Monday's mail pickup. I got on a roll making these and made a bunch of extras.

Beckra I was thinking that a swap featuring an element of nature combined with a man-made structure of some kind would be interesting.

I realized that is what I am most drawn to taking photos of. For example, a stone wall winding through the woods, a weathered fence along a path next to flowering plants, part of a building next to some tree or plant, a winding road lined with fall foliage trees, stairs going down a sand dune on a Cape Cod beach, stuff like that.

Are you up for hosting that type of photo swap or shall I host it?

beckra 10/21/2007 #

Great idea, Christine! I just sent you a PM....

msindy2206 -&- ladydy5 -&- WeBees:

I'm sorry I'm a couple of days late getting my ATC's in the mail to you.

A huge research project come up, and real life had to come first.

However, they're on their way to you now & should be there soon. Hope you enjoy them!

Kate

blushingapples 10/25/2007 #

I got all my ATC! thank you.

ATCarol 11/ 5/2007 #

I have not recieved cards from one person. What do I do?

FarStarr 11/ 7/2007 #

I would send them a message and see if they sent. If they don't answer you can leave a "1" rating.
