Description:

This is my first public swap for Fortune Cookie Fiction, and my third Fortune Cookie Fiction swap ( my first two were done for the Write Now group. Awhile back I was looking through my booklist book (where every other page I glue ticket stubs or fortunes from fortune cookies) and that was when my idea struck me - I would use some of the fortunes I'd saved as starters/tiles for a short story here at Swap-Bot. The first two fortune swaps have been very popular, so as long as they remain so, I will host Fortune Cookie Fiction. Below I will list fortunes and you must choose one of them to write a short story in which you will TITLE OR QUOTE one of the fortune cookie fortunes listed below in your work, then when you are finished, mail to three e-mail partners. There's no postage fees! So it will only cost you some creativity and time (I provide time, you provide the creativity). Here are the fortunes:

01) "Keep your courage up and it will keep you up."

02) "Join a new club today, you'll be surprised."

03) "Never bring unhappy feelings into your home."

04) "Mistakes show us what we need to learn."

05) "Love goes nowhere uninvited."

06) "Keep true to the dreams of your youth."

07) "It's tough to be fascinating."

08) "It could be better, but it's good enough."

09) "It is a happy talent to know how to play."

10) " It is most enjoyable to talk with you."

Now your short story can be fiction, science fiction, fantasy, romance, mystery, suspense or horror. It has to have one of the above fortune cookies TITLED/QUOTED in your story. I want you to have as much creative leeway as possible. Please note it is a short story (between 3-7 typed pages). Going on a little longer or a little shorter is fine, but not just a couple paragraphs & no novellas. I am giving you 6 weeks to write something from the day this swap is assigned. Newbies are welcome (with well filled out profiles) and Swap-Bot members must at least have a 4.75 (with no recent unexplained ones). Also, you must rate, as people will be putting a lot of time & effort into their work, and also because manners really do matter. If you're known to be a non-rater, I WILL exclude you. IF YOU HAVE NOT SENT OUT YOUR FORTUNE COOKIE #2 E-MAIL SWAPS BY THE TIME THIS SWAP SIGN UP DEADLINE, YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS SWAP.

I always "angel" my own swaps (which means I will be writing a second short story) just in case. If you have any questions, please PM me as you will get a much faster response. Let's get writing!

I was soooo bummed this afternoon when I got home and found you had canceled this swap in the write now group...glad to see it here since i'd already fell in love with one of the fortunes and started the story!

Well it's a strange long story. Last time I did this a friend of mine (who lives near me and is a Swap-Bot member) tried to join the group I belonged to and I kept extending the date (so she could get accepted & join). I was written about it by the founder & I explained the reason she hadn't been in many swaps is because she doesn't drive, but e-mail swaps are perfect for her. I was told she was finally accepted into the group, but unfortunately it was after I had finally assigned it. I told my friend, well next time for sure. I told her there was a #3 up last night & she writes me she never was accepted (I was written by the founder last time & told she was). I said, Oh, not again! It's easier to move it to the public forums. That way she can join (she is in perfect standing - rating wise, she just doesn't have that many). But this is e-mail and I always angel my swaps, so no one need worry. :-)

They're all good but I am leaning towards 5/6. I may change my mind, but that's where I am at the moment.

Hello Ri, I found it again and have joined. I am so glad it is in the public forum so that I too can play. I am looking forward to writing my story. Must get back to work. Suzanne

I'm glad to see a #3 because I enjoyed writing #1 and #2. I'm a little sorry it's email because I've lately had problems with people not rating or saying they never received email swaps. I try to explain to people that they can rate a swap the minute they receive it , thus the sender knows it's been recieved; if they don't have time to read a short story at that moment, they can do so later and if it's totally super and they want to give it a heart they can do so later. I never consider my swaps finished until each recipient has rated and it's a real pain asking people did you receive it and often they aren't sure. Anyway, thanks -- these are good fortunes that suggest lots of stories.

Oh, June I wish that were just true of e-mail swaps, but there's a lot of non-rating going on in Swap-Bot, hence the non-raters group. Most of us would like to know it arrived, so we can file the swap & go on with our lives. Then we think, "Well, certainly if they didn't give it a "1" they received it." This is usually true. If you wait to long to ask, they can cop anything from "I don't remember" (Hey, send me another one)- to they are gone from Swap-Bot entirely. If we rate them a non-rater (and they find out) they can claim they never received, and after you resend and reinstate their 'alleged' good rater status they will fix you. All sorts of dastardly and inconsiderate reasons. A few will be going through troubling times and forget. It really isn't right to be both gracious for one's self and hold your partner's end up as well. That's why if I know someone to be a non-rater they will not be allowed to participate. I have not traded with everyone by a long shot, so if anyone here knows someone to be a non-rater, please PM me their name if they have signed up. That's the best I can do, Junemoon. I like to keep it e-mail to keep costs down for everyone (especially in this season and economy).

Like starrycat I was so disapointed to see it canceled so happy you have relisted it, hugs :-)

moxsapphir 12/14/2010 #

Oh you're so welcome! I have been enjoying this very much! Everyone's offerings have been so creative!

junemoon 12/24/2010 #

Thanks for your long answer and thoughtfulness. I'm all for keeping costs down. I still think a hard copy story may lay around a desk a long time but an email disappears with a click. and is forgotten. Anyway, I just looked here because you assigned partners. And I hope for the best -- the brain is already working on a possible plot.
