Description:

Hemmingway was asked to create a six word memoir. He wrote "For sale: baby shoes, never worn". What will your story be?

Create a 4x6 (or so) piece of 'art' (using the term loosely...a photo, collage, drawing, etc... YOUR CALL) including your Six Word Memoir. See this Youtube link for ideas. This 'six words' is YOU. Your story. It can be happy, sad, poignant, silly, dramatic, beautiful, wistful... whatever you want.

Send a good clear color copy of your artwork to each partner. (edit: You can make three original pieces if you'd rather. The other way you can keep the original and send three copies.)

I got the idea from This Swap hosted by AlyssD

Hemingway believed "For Sale: baby shoes, never worn" was the best story he ever wrote.

What did Hemingway mean by that? I'm not gonna lie, I don't really know much about him.

Bucket 03/30/2011 #

Hemingway's goal is for the reader to think about the tragic implications of why someone would be selling a pair of baby shoes that have never been worn. His point is that the whole story is there in just these six words - no more need be said.

Ahhh thank you @Bucket My mind did think "Aww he must have lost a child before they could wear them."

Mine, too. I will have to Google his life now. :)

What do you suggest - should the sender explain in a note what exactly he had in mind with the 6 word story, or should it be left to the swap partner to find whatever meaning in it?

hollycm6 04/11/2011 #

Whichever the sender prefers. :)
