About Me

I am a high school photography teacher who loves the outdoors, my wife, our tabby and craft beer (not in that order). I've been called "old school" on more than one occasion because I still shoot film, I prefer the written letter over an email, I like actual books over e-readers and I'd rather pitch a tent than get a hotel room. I believe everything can be fixed and shouldn't be thrown out until it's time.

I have recently become addicted to fountain pens and cool journals or fancy paper. I love everything stationary because I love to write to people. I think one of the coolest things in the world is an antique used postcard because of the look into the past it can provide.

I just started creating my own note cards for correspondence. I hope to learn more about where folks get all those cool postage stamps that I see others using in journals and as art elements.

I love any and everything to do with photography. I live for old school black and white photography and anything with the colors of the 70's. I have restored and continue to shoot several different types of Polaroid cameras. Remember what color photos looked like back then? That's the color I'm talking about. I even collect and still shoot slide film! Ah, those were the days. I'm always on ebay looking for lots of slides to bring back the "old days".

A recent instagram post alerted me to swap-bot so here I am! Excited to get involved.

Favorite Books

I love books more than TV. I read a ton of James Baldacci, Vince Flyn, Brad Thor etc. Lots of international espionage, spies, military…..

As a photographer I also love collecting books on photography. As a former fly-fishing guide I love all books fly fishing especially those written by John Gierach.

I am constantly on the look out for old Time or Life magazines from the 50's - the 70's. I scan the old adds and share them with my students who love anything "retro".

Favorite Crafts

I'm not "crafty" per se but I am an avid black and white film photographer, build furniture, do minor renovations and have recently got into visual journaling to help enhance my photography program. I found I enjoy journaling with tactile materials that enhance the texture and feel of each page: A coat of ModPodge can do it all! *rice paper *old newsprint *vintage postcards *old stamps *old magazine advertising *beer coasters from various places I've visited *maps *old pictures/polaroids *bookmarks *zentangles *receipts *stickers and stamps *acrylics

As I look at my journal work I realize that I don't seem to like anything flowery/pastel/bright or saturated. My love of the past shows up in my journals as everything seems to be muted, vintage and warm with a bit of a patina.

Comment: Mike, what a lovely intro letter and package! I've always wanted to try writing with fountain pens but was too afraid to smudge the letter or postcard. But your bookmark and mentioned experience has created interest. I love the postcards (I'm in dire need of them) and the beautiful stamps. Thank you so very much. And welcome to Swap-Bot!
