Description:

I had so much fun doing my first magic yarn ball swap a few months ago, that I thought I'd start a winter one. I can't quite get into the commercialized Christmas crap, so I thought I'd have a winter/ nature/ solstice theme. PLEASE USE NATURAL FIBER YARN ONLY and wrap up objects relating to the solstice theme for your partner: Sun & star related items, snowflakes, incense, natural or ribbon flowers, packets of seeds, wooden knitting needles, container of tea or tea bags, etc. Price before shipping should be around $20-30 (including the skein of yarn). I'll make this USA only. Bring some light to a swap partner! I'll be posting the swap pics you send to me (or you can post) at this site http://www.flickr.com/photos/todszine/ It will be fun to see all solstice surprises.

Please include the label from the yarn you send so your partner knows fiber, care instructions, yardage, etc.

PS if you have any NO SENDS, you'll be given the boot. Sorry, but I've been jilted on a few swaps and it is NO fun.

This is my first swap. When making the yarn ball do people tend to use one skein of yarn or two?

todsahonchik 10/28/2006 #

One skein. If you use Google, click google image and search Magic Yarn ball. There are several photos of them, but I couldn't upload one for some reason. You unroll/unwrap the skein and roll it back up with little goodies inside of it. You're buddy gets to unwrap it and see all their treats.

One more note please, swappers. PLEASE INCLUDE THE LABEL OF THE YARN YOU USED SO YOUR PARTNER KNOWS THE YARDAGE, FIBER CONTENT AND WASHING INSTRUCTIONS. Thanks so much for joining.

Here's another good one to get an idea of what they look like http://flickr.com/groups/magicyarnball/pool/

I am almost at my limit for swaps right now, but once I get all my other commitments I will probably sign up for this one since the deadline is end of November...

knitster 10/28/2006 #

Thanks for the info guys...I saw a group on flickr called magic yarn ball...is this the same group? Is that where we post pics of what we are sending?

Lunaria 10/28/2006 #

When I was a kid we used to do the same thing for party favors but wrapped them up in crepe paper instead of yarn. Also, my birthday is on winter solstice, and being holiday season it's hard to find a non-Christmas way to celebrate. So this will be a lovely birthday present! (and I don't even knit! The yarn will end up being a present for someone else!)

todsahonchik 10/29/2006 #

I wish I knew how to upload photos onto a site. If anyone knows how to do that and would be willing, let me know. It probably should be my responsibility as the swap coordinator. Alas, my skills are weak.

todsahonchik 11/ 8/2006 #

I'm in the process of establishing a flicker site for this swap and learning how to upload pics. Plan on sending me an attachment that includes a pic of the yarn ball you received (when it comes) if you so desire.

todsahonchik 11/ 9/2006 #

success! The site is http://www.flickr.com/photos/todszine/

jamaicamom 11/12/2006 #

This is my third swap. I am new to swapping so I am really excited to start. I love sock yarn and can't wait to get my solstice ball started!

Lunaria 11/12/2006 #

I'm not a knitter but love this idea because it reminds me of the crepe paper gift balls I made and got as a kid. Same idea, just using crepe paper instead of yarn. I did this one year for my nieces at the holidays and they absolutely loved it. It was funny watching their distress when they first opened their gift box and just found a big ball of crepe paper!

Hi,

I'm signed up and ready to go. This is only my second swap on swap-bot and the package for the first just went out. This seems like ti will be a lot of fun. I can understand the moon and stars thing for the soltrice. I am wondering if you have to put in knitting needles or is that just an idea. I would really like to get everything covered with my ball of yarn.

todsahonchik 11/12/2006 #

The knitting needles are just an idea, of course. Do what you want, be creative with the theme. Hope this is fun for everyone!

jamaicamom 11/16/2006 #

I hope the 30th gets here fast. I keep collecting items everytime I shop. Just waiting for my swap partner! This is so much fun.

knitster 11/16/2006 #

I know what you mean Ann, mine is also ready to go...I had to finally wrap it up, it is just to hard to resist buying more stuff! lol

todsahonchik 11/27/2006 #

Well, my solstice creation is wrapped and ready to go! Looking forward to seeing buddies on the 30th! If you don't have time to get your yarn creation together, don't forget to drop yourself from the swap. Better to drop out then to get a bad rating. Looks like a great group, though! I don't see the need to ban anyone. Happy Solstice, all!

user2637 11/29/2006 #

I was thinking about joining, but the comments that some of your yarn balls are already done and a little off-putting. What if you get a pal that allergic to whatever fiber you're using? What if you get a vegan pal (like me) who doesn't knit with wool? The last yarn ball swap I did, my partner didn't even read my profile and sent me wool yarn and pink yarn and candies can't eat. It was a little disappointing. I mean, you're making the ball to make your swap partner happy, right?

I guess I just don't understand people who don't customize what they send based on their partner....

I think I'll be hosting a vegan yarn ball in Jan/Feb. I hope some of you join that one too!

todsahonchik 11/29/2006 #

sorry you feel that way. I guess your right about checking your pal's profile. since this was a thematic swap, I think most of us chose items that fit the theme and already wrapped it up. I did mine early because this is a busy time of year. Great idea to do a vegan yarn swap! it is not on most people's radar. Although I'm a vegetarian, I do use natural animal fibers... have a friend with an alpaca ranch and I get some yarn from her and visit the animals while I'm there. I understand your viewpoint, though.

Cheers!

jamaicamom 11/30/2006 #

Will we get our partners today or wait until 12/1? I can not wait!!!

todsahonchik 11/30/2006 #

Today... check after about 5 or 6 p.m.

todsahonchik 12/ 2/2006 #

Hey y'all... PLEASE don't forget to send me an attached photo of your yarn ball and/or its contents so I can post the pics on my (our) yarn ball site. See above info for details. Thanks so much for joining!

jamaicamom 12/ 4/2006 #

I just got my ball from no other than Tod aka Claudia herself! Wow, was it awesome. I am going to try to get mine out today- Tomorrow at the latest. Happy Solstice to ALL!

todsahonchik 12/ 4/2006 #

Got my ball today from Jessica (Messie Jessie!). Thanks so much! It was wonderful! My 8-year-old helped me unwrap it and we had so much fun looking at all the sparkly goodies. I particularly liked the seahorse (now part of my son's hat) and the candles and the YARN! My son took the crystal. I will be taking a pic of the goodies and posting it on the site. Thanks again!!!!!

knitster 12/ 5/2006 #

I got my yarn ball today from Paula...thanks a bunch! I will try to get a pic put up of it tommorrow, and my package will also get to the post office tommorrow. This has been fun!

todsahonchik 12/ 7/2006 #

OK swappers... if you're still with me. BEcause I maxed out my downloads due to uploading personal pics, I started a new page devoted solely to our magic yarn ball pics. If you have any send them my way or post them yourself if it is possible. The address is above in swap homepage. Thanks... learning all the time!

user5141 12/ 9/2006 #

I got my Magic Yarn Ball today from Ann. Thank you! I'm looking forward to exploring what's inside.

user4534 12/ 9/2006 #

I got mine from Debbie Harley, thanks, I'm unwinding the ball as I type! :)

harleychick27 12/12/2006 #

I received the most unusual Magic Yarn Ball from Julie of TisJewelArt, it is a nest!! What a visual delight it was!! I might try to 're-asseble' it and put it on the Chistmas tree! Take a look, I've uploaded FIVE pictures of it in the gallery. (There were none there so I thought, why not?) Thank you, Julie, for a such a special treat!!

todsahonchik 12/12/2006 #

Very cool. Hope you don't mind, I uploaded one of the photos onto the flickr site.

user4534 12/14/2006 #

Glad you liked it Kiki! :) I had fun making it! Initially I had three quail eggs, but they were so fragile that they started to crush in :(, so I ended up with just the one.

user4534 12/14/2006 #

I have pics posted on my flickr of the one I sent: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tisjewelart/306702620/in/set-72157594328627391/

and I posted the one I received on my blog: http://tisjewel.blogspot.com/2006/12/solstice-magic-yarn-ball-stash-swaps.html

Paula 12/14/2006 #

My brain appears to be broken: I can't get the pic of my yarn ball from Kiki to appear where I want it to. Here's the url:

knitster 12/15/2006 #

keisha, did you ever get the package that I sent you? It should have been there by now, I did send it priority, but I can't seem to find anywhere that says you got it. Please let me know...Amy

user1382 12/15/2006 #

hi amy, sorry i did not email sooner, i have been way under the weather. i did get it & the presentation was FABULOUS! it made my heart skip a few beats. the yarn was yummy too...THANKS! :-)

user5141 12/15/2006 #

I can't seem to figure out how to upload a photo.... so here is a link to my website where I have pictures of the Magic Yarn Ball I received from Ann: http://planetdyann.typepad.com/dyannknits/2006/12/nomorebahum.html and a picture of the Yarn Ball I sent to Mermaid.

http://planetdyann.typepad.com/dyannknits/2006/12/solstice_magic.html I'm hoping it arrived safely?

todsahonchik 12/15/2006 #

I thought it would be fun to have a site where we could share all the pictures of the yarn balls. Seems like people would like to have them on their personal sites instead, which is fine with me. As long as everyone is having fun is my motto.

If you would still like to send me your pictures, send it as an attachment in an e-mail and send it to MY e-mail which is on my info.
Happy solstice to all and to all a good night.

todsahonchik 12/15/2006 #

.....When you send it to my e-mail, I will post it on the page.

knitster 12/16/2006 #

I am so glad you got your ball keisha, sorry you have been sick. Glad you liked it, I had tons of fun putting it together for you! :)

user4783 12/17/2006 #

I have sent a letter of apology to my swap partner, because it sounded like she did not like the items I sent. I purchased items from my local gift shop, which were evidently not what she expected, they were not "found around the house" items, or "dollar store" things, as she said. (not that there is anything wrong with those things)

I apologized for not interpreting the swap as she expected and I hope that we can all be open to everyone's ideas and interpretations of a theme.

Thanks Shayla
