This swap continues our series of "Write" swaps. They are all based on a great book that I found at the library. See below for author and other info if you'd like to purchase or find a copy. The swap: Mapping MemoryThis one has several parts so I'm creating a longer completion time for the overall swap. While it's flat mail you'll be creating, since there is a creating component, I've noted this as a Type 3 swap. You’ll be sending your partner a hand-drawn/written image and then a scene, essay, poem or whatever it is you write/create. Step 1: Take a piece of paper and use the whole sheet (i.e. 8.5x11) to draw the map of a meaningful landscape -- for example, a neighborhood, a park, an empty lot – from your childhood. Take 20 minutes and fill in as many specific details as you can. Step 2: Mark the location of three significant incidents on the map. Step 3: Imagine yourself into one of those incidents and write a list of sensory details (sound, smell, etc.) you associate with the experience. Step 4: Using the most evocative details on your list, write the incident in two pages. Step 5: Finally, write another version reimagining the experience from the point of view of a central character – that isn’t you. You will send your partner (feel free to photocopy if you want to keep the originals):
