This is an embroidery swap. Just send one small, yes, think small yet detailed, little embroidered bird. It can be from a transfer image, vintage, or handmade pattern. Let's make this a "cheep" swap...so just send a little bird on a swatch of fabric or muslin inside a notecard with envelope with a little note on your bird. You'll have one partner and this is an international swap! Cheep cheep!

This is a wonderful swap idea. I just hope my embroidery skills are up to par with everyone else's! :)

Mamameo 01/27/2007 #

I'm new at embroidery, so I too hope that all you experts give us newbies a little wee break! Cheep cheep!

I live in the Texas hill country and we have so many winter birds, alot of cardinals, scub jays, wrens, hawks and eagles. So I'm thinking of embroiderying some colorful winter bird. Cardinals are such a beautiful bright red I am thinking of trying that. I hope I can make it small enough. Can't wait to see what everyone else is embroidering...anyone else willing to share their ideas?

I'm in Texas too! Austin to be exact! I was thinking of a cardinal as well.ha! I am a birder as well, so maybe something colorful will pop in my eyesight soon and inspire me.

PoMoGolightly 01/29/2007 #

I was thinking of a robin as it is my state (CT) bird, but I've also thought about a canary....

lilylemon 01/31/2007 #

Is "generic bird" an option? I'm already worrying you all are going to outclass me! I think I'll start now and if it isn't up to par, I can do another. MAybe I'm being paranoid but I want to make sure i'll come up with something my partner will like.

VINCAORCHID 01/31/2007 #

Vidya, I'm not far from Austin. I live on a ranch in Blanco county close to the Blanco River State Park. We have birding tours there. We are living in an excellent area for bird watching because so many different kinds of birds migrate though our area coming and going from North America to South America. One of my favorite vistors is the Cedar-Wax-Wing. The Blue Jays are in the park right now, I saw one yesterday, they stay the winter only.

Winter. Guess you might call me an avid brd watcher too.

Mamameo 02/ 1/2007 #

No, no...a "generic" bird is a-okay! I may possibly go generic as well....as long as it's a birdie, it's fine.

Mamameo 02/ 1/2007 #

Cheep cheep for winter birds!

lilylemon 02/ 1/2007 #

Vidya and Deborah -- I wonder if you live anywhere near my dad and his wife's new place. I've never been to Texas (yet), so my geography might be fuzzy. The mailing address is Junction and they bought a place on the Y.O. Ranch.

user5729 02/ 3/2007 #

Hi I am cross stitcher is that ok? I can embroir some but my cross stitch would be alot nicer?

Mamameo 02/ 5/2007 #

Lizardplum, no problem. If it's possible to do a little of both (embroir and cross) that would be great.

Lily Lemon, I've heard of the Y.O. Ranch..but have never been there. I think I've driven by on my way to Houston.

user5729 02/ 6/2007 #

hi actually i am doing some of both. just please understand I am a novice..but i plan to send my best. This was a little kick in the rear to oick up my needle again.

Mamameo 02/ 6/2007 #

I'm fairly new as well LP...i think you'll be fine! cheep cheep!

lilylemon 02/ 8/2007 #

My little bird is done and waiting to know who his recipient will be!

user6171 02/ 9/2007 #

are newbies welcome(new to swapping and embroidery)? And does it have to be a tradtional "winter bird"?

lilylemon 02/10/2007 #

Oh, good question! I just went with the "small, yet detailed" part of the instructions! I assumed that the "winter bird" just meant it's winter now, so a cute little bird will brighten our day! My bird is an African bird -- maybe he's a winter bird there!

Mamameo 02/12/2007 #

No..it does not have to be a winter bird. And yes, newbies are welcome!

VINCAORCHID 02/15/2007 #

Hi, hope everyone is staying warm on this cold day, I have finished my cardinal and I was happy with how it turned out hope my swap partner likes it too. Good idea to have a winter bird swap I can't wait to see what other people are doing.I love embroidery. The thread is so cheep compared to paint prices. Hand sewing is not so popular now days but it should be and I'm so impressed that so many have joined this swap. I'm sure we will all love what we receive from our partners and I hope to learn from sharing with this FUN project!

aya 02/18/2007 #

This got me to try some needle work for the first time in ages, I'm really happy with the way it came out. I send it out today.

wigglywourms 02/19/2007 #

I just uploaded a photo of what I\'m mailing off today. It doesn\'t say it was me who loaded it though...LOL...so in case you\'re wondering, it was me :o) It\'s going in the mail today...off to California (Dawn...don\'t peek if you\'d like to be surprised). I\'m glad I joined this swap...I haven\'t embroidered in YEARS (except cross-stitch). I also found a very cool site with lots of free patterns (which is where I found my little bird).... NeedleCrafter.com ~Marianne

lilylemon 02/20/2007 #

Okay -- mine is on the way. Partner, let me know when it gets there.

threesweetpeas 02/21/2007 #

as usual i am running late but my birdie will be in the mail this weekend! thanks for undersatnding:)

lilylemon 02/21/2007 #

AmanitaEater -- That blue-footed booby is an incredible-looking bird!I think you did an awesome job. I know exactly what you mean about trying to find the back ! :) I, however, left it mess and all. My partner can decide if she wants to make it into a scahet or pincushion or whatever.

Wigglywourms -- I like your, too. Can\'t wait to see what everyone else chose!

threesweetpeas 02/22/2007 #

hi amy, your little bird went is finished and ready to go out in the morning mail from sweden. i am a total newbie to embroidery but i think its real cute, just dont mind the back, LOLOL i was carrying the thread like knit and crochet, anyway i learned not to do that anymore, overall i am happy with it, it was my second attempt!! i sure hope you like it:)

Mamameo 02/23/2007 #

You guys are great!! I'll be starting another birdie embroidery swap, so watch for it!

lilylemon 02/23/2007 #

Oops! Should have proofread -- I meant "hide" the back! I received my little bird today from AmanitaEater and he's just pricelss! Thank you! Awesome swap! I'd love another mbroidered bird swap (or animal swap). Fun stuff!

lucyellen 02/26/2007 #

Lily Lemon - !!! Your little bird has arrived and I am thrilled to pieces! All ready framed and helping me in my sewing room, he has found a good home - Opening your package was all the more awesome because I had glimpsed him in the photo downloads and wondered what lucky person would get him ---- me! Thank you very much

lilylemon 02/26/2007 #

Oh, I\'m so glad you like him! I was concerned about what my partner might think about the realistic approach, plus I had a hard time with the larger solid areas -- I never have figured out the best way to do big areas -- satin stitch doesn\'t quite work. Anyone have any tips?

lilylemon 03/ 2/2007 #

This was the most rewarding swap I've been in so far. Thanks, Vidya, for organizing it!

threesweetpeas 03/12/2007 #
