Description:

I am addicted to making crocheted granny squares, but I am limiting myself to using yarn that I have in my stash. I have visions of turning all of the squares into some kind of funky afghan of many colors. But, since I am a bit limited in my color selections from my own stash, I thought 'Why not swap!' Would you like to join me?

This swap is a continuation of the previous acrylic granny square swap but the partnering has been changed a bit.

In this swap you will send 3 traditional/basic granny squares to two people (so you will send and receive 6 squares). The squares should measure 6 inches on each side, and make sure to use at least two colors per square. Though this sounds like a lot of squares, don't fret - you have tons of time. Please use a washable, durable acrylic yarn. To promote the creation of the most scraptacular afghans, you have no color choice and are at the mercy of your partner's stash.

This swap is international and you must have a rating greater than 4 to participate. Newbies with completed profiles (or that have contacted me) are welcome.

I love this idea. It is a way to collect these squares from people we interact with all the time on swapbot. It is not only a swap but a way to create a memory! I love that about this.

betherann 03/19/2007 #

I'm very excited about this swap (my first!). :)

kushkusha 03/21/2007 #

I have a question and a request :-) 1. Shouldn't the squares consist of at least two colors?? 2. Can the Last Date be April 25 , I want so much to join please...

girlontherocks 03/21/2007 #

Thanks Kush, I agree about the two colors. We did that in the other swap, I just forgot to add it to the description.

jannikinz 03/22/2007 #

Since joining up yesterday, I am working on square nbr 5..love this, it's great fun.

betherann 03/28/2007 #

This is so exciting. I love how much better I'm getting at making granny squares as practice for this swap. And it will be cool to receive surprise squares in the mail. :)

carmelnap 03/28/2007 #

Oh this is gonna be fun. I am on a granny square making kick right now.:)

kushkusha 03/29/2007 #

I really enjoy it:-) I suggest that next time the swap will include more complicated squares as well - like flower in the middle or other idea What is your opinion??

betherann 03/29/2007 #

That would be fun, Kush. I just bought the book 200 Crochet Blocks and am eager to start using it!

user7276 03/29/2007 #

My first swap - so cool! =) I'm busting out the yarn right now to get started! lol Kel

gillicious 03/31/2007 #

Here's a question: is it better to be slightly over, or slightly under, 6"? Or are we expected to block the squares to 6" before sending?

Windchimes 04/ 1/2007 #

I missed the kind of granny squares completely. Glad you caught that KushKusha. I am into the more complicated ones myself right now - interlocking rings, 3D flowers, etc. I am going to sit this one out, but I'll be back for others!! I wish I could do them all but unfortunately there are only so many hours in the day. Best of luck to all of you and see you in the next granny square swaps in the future! Adelle

alicepalace 04/ 3/2007 #

Ooh, yeah, what do people (and karrie in particular) think about gillicious's question about the size thing? I know mine are coming up slightly under 6" at the moment (of course i can always add a bit!).

I dunno how effective blocking would be on acrylic squares. I tend to give mine a run through the washing machine to sort them out a bit but I always thought blocking only works properly on natural fibres?

girlontherocks 04/ 3/2007 #

I don't know about the size.... I was kinda planning on going around the edge of all of mine with one more row. All in the same color to kinda unify the whole the blanket... I would guess that slightly under would be better because if you were adding a row you could adjust it, but you wouldn't really want to rip out a row if it was too big...

I can't believe the sign up period for this swap is almost over! I was thinking about starting a "Fancy Granny" swap next - for non-traditional/fancier grannies. Sounds like Windchimes, Kush and Betherann might be interested! How many partners/squares do you think we should swap?

betherann 04/ 3/2007 #

Maybe do a couple fewer...I'm thinking 4 squares total, since they will be more complex and (at least for me) the foray into non-traditional squares will be new territory. You could still do 2 swap partners, but they'll only get 2 squares each, or just swap for all 4. It might also depend on how many people sign up.

girlontherocks 04/ 4/2007 #

betherann, that is right along the lines of what I was thinking....

4 squares... I like the idea of at least 2 partners (2 squares sent to each). I know it means more postage, but if someone flakes, you still get something.

jannikinz 04/ 4/2007 #

Hi Karrie, that sounds good to me too. 4 squares, 2 partners..I'll most certainly join....& any granny square swaps - I love them.

SaReMa 04/ 9/2007 #

Hi, I just had a look at you comments... Please help me on this: we have 2 partners, right? at the begining you were talking about sending 3 squares to each partner, right? Has that changed? If so, please clarify me of the new details. I've been making the squares, so far I have 4 made already. Thanks... Sandra

betherann 04/ 9/2007 #

Nope, they're talking about the next swap, Sandra. For now it's 2 partners that get 3 traditional squares each.

SaReMa 04/ 9/2007 #

Oh...OK, then! 4 done, 2 to go! Thanks Behterann! And I'm up for the next swap also! Count me in! I'm also crazy for granny squares! eheheh

SaReMa 04/ 9/2007 #

I'm sorry for the mistake! I meant to write Betherann!

SaReMa 04/ 9/2007 #

Hi again! just a quick FYI: in case anyone's interested, I have a swap concewrning granny squares, but a bit different...it's about materials (meaning yarn) for granny squares...sometimes you lack the material to make the squares, or have too much of it (as I do) and want to share it. I though it would be fun, and that by that way, er could make squares for future granny squares with that yarn.

Here's the link: http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/2932

Hope to see you there!^_^

HappyCactus 04/10/2007 #

Karrie - can you let me know when you start the next one...please and thank you!

lulubird6 04/10/2007 #

wait! what was the verdict on the under 6" squares? mine are just shy of 6", I cut out a piece of cardboard to check against. I could do another round of sc around, what do you guys think?

kushkusha 04/10/2007 #

LuluBird you are right But..... The basic requirment was - to do the squares without ending. So the sc around is not so ideal:-)

girlontherocks 04/10/2007 #

I made a swap for "Fancy" (anything non-traditional) Grannies!

http://www.swap-bot.com/swap/show/3089

If you have any comments I would be willing to change the requirements slightly before a lot of people sign up.

jannikinz 04/10/2007 #

Two packages just mailed...Browns Mills N.J. & Hampton VA. Air mail, so they shouldn't take too long.

lulubird6 04/11/2007 #

thanks kushkusha! I did one last night and must say that they look much better with the sc, but will go back and pull it out. All squares are done, just the dreaded weaving in of ends and then they're off!

SaReMa 04/13/2007 #

Hey everybody! Just finished my squares, and they're going out to postage today, to meet Beth (USA) and Jan (Australia). They should be arriving by next week. Hope you like them!^_^

betherann 04/15/2007 #

Exciting! My squares (to Australia and Brown Mills) are on their way!

HappyCactus 04/16/2007 #

Sandramatos and Suzie64 - your squares are on their way! Sorry...I forgot to put my notecard in them...the post office was crazy!! Let me know when you get them.

jannikinz 04/16/2007 #

Thankyou to Beth, I have just received your 3 lovely squares...going to join them all into a blanket.

betherann 04/16/2007 #

Yay! You'll have to post some photos.

jannikinz 04/17/2007 #

Thankyou now goes to Sandra (sandramatos)..Your squares are safe in my possession. Very nice too.

lulubird6 04/18/2007 #

betherann 04/23/2007 #

I just got three of my squares -- from Portugal! And they are beautiful, thank you!!

betherann 04/23/2007 #

How do you rate people for this swap? I can't find the link anywhere, either on this page or Sandra's page (I want to give her a great rating!).

girlontherocks 04/23/2007 #

Gillicious and blondeattitude - your squares are on their way!

kushkusha 04/25/2007 #

Just send mine this will take about two weeks - all are international!!

johannauk 04/26/2007 #

HUGE apologies to the two pals I am sending too...just got a reminder from Swap-bot....for some reason I had it marked on my calendar to send by Friday. I will try to get them in the mail tonight, hope you will enjoy them - SORRY!!

alicepalace 04/26/2007 #

lulubird - i got your squares yesterday, thank-you! I like the camo one, it's cool :)

lulubird6 04/26/2007 #

alice-palace, I'm glad you like it! I was worried because it's not "traditional" but I thought it was funny and may someday make a camo afghan for a little pseudo-irony.

alicepalace 04/27/2007 #

Well, y'know, the other ones were cool too - but i totally understand the need for a bit of fun/ silliness because, addictive as it is, the repetitiveness of making a million grannies can get to a person sometimes!

user7276 04/29/2007 #

I am so sorry to my partners! My computer has been down for daaaays & I couldn't get the addresses I needed to send to! Please bear with me - all is going out tomorrow! You are not forgotten, I promise! :)

lulubird6 05/ 4/2007 #

I totally forgot to come back and let Angelina and Angelique (cool! two angels!) that I got their squares! Thanks! They're great and can't wait to put them into a lapghan I'm working on.

ANGELFAIRY 05/ 5/2007 #
