Kitchen Challenge Swap Series

For this swap series each swap will address a different food, cooking/baking technique, or style of food/cooking. This series is for kitchen nerds who enjoy to experiment in the kitchen, try new things, and donโ€™t mind if a recipe fails a time or two. So get out your pots, pans, trusty spoon, a kitchen scale (if you have it), and an open mind. Lets have some fun!

This series is also a great way to start a cooking and/or baking journal. I use my baking journal as a way to track recipes Iโ€™ve tried, how the recipe turned out, what Iโ€™d try next time, and any substitutes or conversions I made. Itโ€™s a great tool for food nerds who love to spend time in the kitchen.

This swapโ€™s challenge is: Roux

For this swap we will be exploring recipes that utilize a โ€œrouxโ€ in it. A roux is made by cooking flour in a fat such as butter, lard, pan drippings, or ghee. By cooking the flour and fat together it creates a thickening and flavoring agent that is the base for gravies, gumbo, bechamel (white) sauces, stews, and more. Itโ€™s even possible to make vegan roux, so donโ€™t be discouraged if you are! I personally use roux to make gravy for pot pies, pasta sauces, and cheese sauces. For this challenge find a recipe that utilizes a roux, make it, document it, and share it as outlined in the swap details below.

Swap Details:

  • Send your partner the recipe you tried, typed and printed or legibly written. Make sure you include the recipe author and book/blog/website you got the recipe from if applicable.
  • Send a picture of the recipe you made with notes about your experience with the recipe and/or technique. (Picture and notes can be combined on the same page)
  • For example: Would you make this recipe again? What did you enjoy about this recipe? What did you not like about this recipe? Any tips/tricks? Etc.
  • This is a senders choice swap. You do not have to make this recipe if you donโ€™t want to when you receive it if it conflicts with your personal dietary restrictions, however you must rate a 5 if all of the swap requirements are met.
  • This is an international swap, please allow enough time for transit between your respective countries

Swap Requirements:

  • You must have a rating of 4.9800 or higher and I will ban swappers at my own discretion to keep this swap safe.
  • You must send the following items: 1 typed & printed or legibly handwritten recipe that you tried (it doesnโ€™t need to be on a recipe card), 1 typed & printed or legibly handwritten page with notes on the recipe (see examples above) and a picture of your finished recipe.
  • Make sure you credit the recipe author and cookbook/blog/website you got the recipe from!
  • Communication: If you are going to be late on sending please notify your partner as soon as possible.
  • I will angel this swap if necessary after you have rated your partner a 1.
  • Fold it up, slap the correct denomination stamp on it, and drop it in the mail box by the send deadline. (:
  • Have any questions? Send me a pm via the SB messaging system or drop a question into the comments box below!
  • Want an email version? Let me know! If there is enough interest i'll run an identical "type 1" version of this swap!

Lets get cookinโ€™!
