Description:

sorry everyone, I've just spend a week in hospital. Just got home and have caught up on everything. Your partners are now assigned and I've added extra time for completion

You must have a rating of 5 or a good reason for a lower rating.

The purpose of this swap is to create and swap blocks of crazy quilting where you use random scraps of fabric in a random pattern to form a block that makes up a bigger quilt.

The easiest way to do this is to sew the random fabric on top of an existing square of cotton, making sure to go around every edge of the scrap fabric.

I'm new to quilting, but not sewing so I'm going to ask for comments about what size we should make these blocks. Anyone? ...Well 8 1/2 inches seems to be the favorite for all the PM's so lets make that our official size.

As to fabrics etc there are no rules! I use all my random offcuts which could be silk/cotton/rayon etc as well as short pieces of ribbon and lacy edgings.

mystmaiden has asked if these should be embellished blocks or pieced but unembellished blocks? I'm thinking unembelished...but I'm open to a vote. :)

I'll be running these CQ swaps for as long as there's interest

This one has me intrigued but am trying to control my swap addiction so will put on watchlist while I think about it:) Thanks for making it Int 'tho. Some swaps are doing 12.5" blocks, 9.5", 8.5" and even 6.5". I guess it will depend on how long the swap will go eg. 12 mths? 12 x12.5" is a good sized quilt. Or ongoing maybe smaller blocks for a quilt. Wallhangings are also good, they'd be smaller blocks I think.

Speaking as a veteran crazy quilter, it depends somewhat on the fabrics you plan on using. Crazy quilting is often done on silks and other fancy fabrics and has lots of embellishment, which is best for display rather than daily use. If its for display, small blocks are fine but if you're looking to make a larger quilt you'd want to make them bigger, for larger quilts you might want to do all cottons... Watching this swap, definitely!

Just reread my previous comment, and there is something important I left out. The freedom and beauty of crazy quilting is that there are No Rules ! (talking sewing dos and don'ts there, not swap rules) I made it sound like there are and that really isn't the case. I've swapped tiny tiny blocks and big ones and been happy with all of them.

as for the size of the blocks, you could give a minimum and maximum size? Say no smaller than 6 x 6 inches and no larger than 12 x 12 inches? It still gives freedom to the artist, but also pertains to the no rules feature of the crazy quilt! I hope you keep this up, this could be one really cool quilt!

I would suggest a uniform block size - say 8 1/2 inches [finishes 8 inches] - I'm watching this one but very interested. F O'F

Would we be swapping an embellished block? Or just a pieced block?

Thanks!

I think embellished or not should be left up to the sender. If the sender sends one that they took time to embellish maybe that's worth a heart. But I know that many are leary about hearts. It's all up to each individual and I don't have a problem either way. I'm just not that great at embellishing lol. Although I'd give it a try. I haven't swapped in sometime and am itching to start again.

Craftlover10101 02/12/2009 #

Oh I'll be joining but if it is mandatory for the embellishments than I'll have to back out for fear that mine would not be very good. lol

wocket 02/13/2009 #

lets go unembellished then! :)

Craftlover10101 02/15/2009 #

Thanks Wocket for letting us know. I can't wait, it's been a while since I've swapped. :-)

mystmaiden 02/18/2009 #

Was a standard size decided upon?

Craftlover10101 02/19/2009 #

Yes it's 8 1/2 inches

Well partners have not been assigned and usually I like to go by my partners profile for the extras. This late start does not give me enough time to shop for extras. I live so far out from any stores and with kids and all I wont have the time now. I'm sorry. Have fun everyone. Heather
