Description:

This is based on a children's game. The idea is to shuffle cards with a subject, a verb, an object and location to create random sentences. For each partner, you will make 12 ATC sized (2 ½" x 3 ½") cards. These cards will only have words on them, so no art is required. They can be as silly or as poignant as you want, but please keep the language clean.

There will be 4 sets of 3 cards for each partner.

Set 1, Subject: The subject of the sentence
Examples: (The dog, Harry Potter, My neighbor Phil)

Set 2, Verb: A verb phrase connecting to an object
Examples: (created, will dance with, was observed by)

Set 3, Object: A noun that is being influenced by subject
Examples: (mushrooms, a bowling pin, Bob Barker)

Set 4, Location: Where the event takes place
Examples: (in the London Underground., under a bed., in my mind.)

On the back of each card label clearly which set it comes from (Subject, Verb, Object, Location.)

When you have received the cards from your partners, shuffle the sets individually and draw up a sentence. (Example: The dog will dance with Bob Barker under a bed.)
Post your favorite creation in the comments field!

Hi, this Random Story Generator sounds fun. It might be a good insperational tool for someone suffering from writer's block... Hmmm... I know it's just words, but should they just be hand-written on plain card, or made slightly decorative?

Chaz 06/28/2007 #

Kessie, you can be as decorative or as plain as you want to be. Just make sure they get sent by the deadline. Since the grand total number of cards is 36, I am trying to keep things simple. If you have the energy, go for it!

Happy Swapping!

Chaz

Chaz, storylaura, and kessie, cards went out today. Have fun!

I received my first 12 today and my 5 year old and I had a blast just playing with them alone! I think he is going to make me do all mine different so he can make up silly sentences before I send them off! (actually I think I'll make him a set of his own with the PECS pictures that we use at school so he can 'read' them on his own!)

Kessie, cards arrived yesterday. Great set! Thanks!

Ok, I was a bit confused by the instructions to shuffle the sets individually - did you mean combine all the cards you received to make one big 'game'?

I've done that, but I also tried them indivdually:

My favourite sentence using the cards Chaz sent me was: "Barney the Dinosaur hid behind a coat rack on the former planet known as Pluto"

My favourite sentence using the cards StoryLaura sent me was: "A very, very, very small chipmunk, with one white paw, floats in a bowl of melted ice cream left over by a herd of errant editors outside a particularly seedy bar on the outskirts of a suburb of Helsinki"

My favourite sentence using the cards Beawhiz sent me was: "The President is juggling a garden gnome on the flying trapeze"

And here is my favourite sentence using cards from all three partners: "Elvis's lost bowling ball conversed with a roller skate in the Tunnel of Love...
