Description:

This brilliant idea came from the Somerset Home 2009 issue!

It was luckily brought to my attention by the lovely @Homeandheart that matches are to not be sent in the mail as they are considered a hazard. This will be changed to matchbook notebooks, thank you for the suggestion @CraftyAnnie

For the swap you will alter and decorate TWO matchbook notebooks and send to ONE partner. This will be light to ship and should be very easy-peasy.

To Make:

Purchase matchbooks, which can be found at your local major grocery store or you can also often pick them up for free inside a liquor store or cigarette store up by the counter. I found some also at an estate sale. It doesn't matter what they look like on the outside since that will be covered up, but just make sure all the matches are inside of it.

The theme is up to you, but just think whimsical somerset style! The creator herself went for a whimsical Victorian theme and choose floral and print papers, vintage fabric ruler bits, ric rac, thread, rub-ons and words cut out of a book or magazine. All of the above would be very appropriate for this and is encouraged. None of it was matchy matchy but it turned out adorable. She also sewed on hers (which I attempted on mine as well) and I really liked the outcome.

You will use Mod Podge or another glue medium to completely glue and cover your bits onto the matchbooks covering all sides except the striker. Then after this is dried you are ready to embellish, stitch, punch holes, or so on to make it something special and that you would love to receive! The matchbooks do not have to look the same. Whatever you do to each of them is up to you.

Send with it a little note describing what you did and to say Hi!

Edited to add in tutorial: So to make the matchbook notebook you may use a matchbook you already have and just remove the matches and decorate or you this tutorial and make your own. Still decorate them as you would have prior, the only difference is you will be adding in paper instead of having matches! Depending on the weight of the paper please add at least 10 sheets into the notebook. But you may use more than that!

Have fun and if you have any questions, please ask! I want to make this a swap that is fun for everyone!!!

This is the one I made when I first saw the article. I put it together quickly and it was a lot of fun.

I have a suggestion. What about making a matchbook notepad? Instead of the matches, you put small paper stapled to the bottom, just as the matches are stapled. The cover can be made out of cardstock. Just an idea or alternative to the matchbook with matches. The outside can be decorated as usual. Just an idea.

I talked to CraftyAnnie and I think this will be a good idea for one of our next swaps. I even thought about making it a bit bigger and it would be a decent size notepad for the purse. Thanks for the suggestion!

I checked USPS website and matches are considered hazardous material, and are not suppose to be shipped. Wait for update please.................

These are SO fun to make. They are a great addition to slipping into each of your swaps to add an extra little goodie. I've always had comments on them when sent to my partners.

Matchbook notebooks are super neat and easy. I like to have them in my purse to jot quick notes. And they aren't too heavy, so they should be relatively cheap to send...whoo-hoo!
