Description:

Let's write a story! Rules for the series

Each card in this series will start with an archetypal character as you might find in any story - "Team Leader", "Second In Command", "Scientist" e.t.c.

Your task:

1) hand draw/paint a character fufilling that role. It can be a pose, an image of them "in action" or even something more conceptual.

2) write a short bio for the character.

3) Send to your partner.

The finished collection will be a "team" of heroes, and possibly some villains too. As well as a pen full of plotbunnies, which might inspire you to start writing.

Swap One: The Captain, Team Leader, Hero

Every story starts with a protagonist. Name? Background? Male or Female? Worldview? Any Special Skills? Good moral compass, or are they shady? How does he feel about the other five characters in the swap? Any romantic tension? Although you haven't made any other characters yet, and won't know what your partner has in any case, sketch something vaguely in advance (it might clash interestingly with the way they feel about this character!)

General Instructions

These swaps will run as long as people remain interested. If no one signs up, then I'll shelve the idea as Neat But Unsuccessful. You can do as many or few of the swaps as you like. If successful, we might ultimately do a story swap with the stories its inspired.

When you sign up, comment with the general location/theme you want your story to be set in: noir, steampunk, contemporary, sci-fi e.t.c. So you don't get a crazy combo of styles (unless that's what you want!)

Usual rules apply: no flakes, no flakes, no flakes, no lazy efforts, no one with appalling ratings.

But I can't draw...! If you think you can produce something original and inspiring (i.e. without printing out someone else's character art straight off the internet...), PM me and we'll talk about it :)

Schedule (for now, open to other ideas) 1) Team Leader - Hero 2) Second in Command - Best Friend - Backup 3) Scientist - Tecchie - Engineer 4) Wild card 5) Supervillain - bad guy - chief rival 6) Supervillian's minion

Location/Theme:

  • I'd love to get something...how can I put this? That would fit into an old-fashioned horror movie or a Lovecraft story. So, 1920's-30's, say, with elements of the fantastic and horrific. Tentacles optional. 8)

  • Or, if you're not into horror, I am always up for steampunk. Especially steampunk with rocket ships.

I'd love everything set in a classic pirate's world. Like 1800's "pirates of the Caribbean" thing minus the fantasy part. im excited and LOVE this idea!

so do we write about what we want or what our partners wants?

Unmutual 05/29/2010 #

We write a character which fits in with our partner's story. They write one fitting with yours.

For me: some sort of government agency from World War II, keeping tabs on the supernatural. Maybe dealing with the Enemy's otherworldly weaponry, maybe just monsters-of-the-week. Somewhere in Europe would be most fun, but I'll let my first partner decide where (Blitz-torn London? Occupied France? Germany itself would be pretty cool).

can we collage these??
