Description:

Swappers will make a good gris-gris for their partners using the recipe below. A gris-gris is a little bag with fragrant, potent fetishes and natural objects inside it, that is used to provide a charm. Our gris-gris will differ from the traditional in that they are not voodoo and they are just for good fun.

Martha's Gris-Gris Recipe

  • One small bag made of cloth, leather, pleather or other tactilely pleasing fabric. The bag must have an attached string tie closure. It is this bag into which you will put the gris-gris ingredients, below.

  • A sprinkling of one or more fragrant natural substances like rosemary, lavender, any culinary herb or seed, balsam, cedar shavings, etc.(*)

  • A tablespoon or more of small round natural objects such as little seashells, bits of stone or crystals, seeds with interesting shapes, nuts or beans.(*)

  • A small coin such as a penny, dime, belly-dancing coin or birr.

  • At least one feather.

  • A tiny scrap of fabric that you have held close to your heart.

  • A trinket or charm that relates to your partner's profile.

(*) some countries' postal regulations won't allow seeds etc., so please be prepared to substitute some creative non-natural items if your partner lives in, say, Australia.

Gently mix all these ingredients into the fabric bag, tie the closure shut, press the bag to your forehead and send good thoughts toward your partner.

Mail the gris-gris bag in a small padded mailer.

All welcome with 4.8 or higher ratings and no recent poor ratings without an explanation. Newbies who communicate well are welcome at my discretion. Thanks for playing!

just a heads up - seeing as this is international, sending seeds and plant material (possibly natural feathers & shells too?) or anything that isn't properly treated won't go down well with quarantine (At least, Australian quarantine laws.. but i think it's the same overseas too). Just thought I'd mention.

I'd love to join this myself (great idea and really sweet!), but as there is this problem.. you may want to check out substitutes for anything natural (which is actually a shame since i love natural stuff from other countries! :/).

can i use a organza bag>?

NorthernBorder 10/19/2010 #

Strawberry, thanks so much for pointing this out. I think the simplest solution is to say substitutions are fine when required by postal regulations. Reauk, organza sounds lovely, even though all gris-gris that I've seen are not see-through, to keep the magic inside.

I liked this. Fun thing is Gris means pig in my language. I´ll watch this too see if i can find a feather.
