Description:

I created a Harriet the Spy paper doll for a recent swap and it was a lot of fun. Happy Honey Bee suggested a paper doll swap for the group so here goes - btw this is my first swap as host. Be kind!

Create for your partner a paper doll (and clothes & accessories) based on one of your favorite book characters. Create items that relate to the character - Paddington's raincoat; Alice's signature blue dress and red striped stockings; Laura's flannel nightgown and her doll, Charlotte!

Send the finished doll to your partner and include a letter or note explaining why you chose the character and how you chose the items to include in their wardrobe. Don't limit yourself to girl characters - animals and toys count too!

Don't trust your drawing skills? Trace an existing doll shape and embeillish it any way you like - glue on a cut out face, garments, hair style from a magazine, catalog or book of illustrations. Or trace an existing page of paper dolls and clothes and decorate your tracings to suit your chosen character.

Here is a link to a blog post that I shared with Honey Bee - maybe it will inspire you.

Be sure use your imagination, do your best work and above all, to have fun!

Here is the fabulous Harriet the Spy paper doll that @Shandymink drew for me! It's amazing.

Thanks for hosting this swap...I can't wait to see the dolls that come out of it. :)

I don't know if there is a minimum or a maximum - "classic" paper dolls often had a set of night clothes, play clothes and dressy clothes but I think as long as you are providing items that your character would have worn/used/had that will be sufficient. Maybe Alice's crown, her cat Dinah? Her Queen dress was a little fancier according to Tenniel, wasn't it? And you don't have to stick only to Tenniel's or Rackam's illustrations!

For more ideas here is a link to Betsy McCall paper dolls - these appeared in McCall's magazines for years. They always included a little info about Betsy and the clothes.

Don't feel you have to adhere to a page of paper dolls and clothes - feel free to make a single doll, dressed or not, with additional clothes or not - my friends used to draw their own dolls and their clothes did not come off. They just drew the same "character" in whatever outfit they needed or wanted at the time.
