Description:

1) Create 12 blocks (4" square)-These can be "quilt" blocks, paper collage blocks, crochet or knit "granny" squares, whatever medium you like. Please include some starting point for the layering process with these first block rotations. The more layers the more interesting, anything to get the ball rolling.

Defination of Layer: Collage, stitching, cut work, painting or glazing etc...You could add a bit of something to one part and something else to another other part. Each "layer" doesn't need to cover the whole piece but you need to do more than glue a bead to one side and call it done. These are mini collaborative ART pieces so put your heart into them. These are also two sided so I encourage you to look at both sides as we begin, perhaps both sides could get some attention. I would request that we include on the "Backs" the addition of each persons initials and a # 1-5 to indicate which round you participated in. Check out some ATC's or other collage types of work for inspiration.

We will all end up with 12 different blocks collaborated on by 5 people that we can then assemble in any way we wish (in a book, on the wall, stitched together, whatever).

We will use swap bot to create automatically generated random swap partners. You will get an email before each rotation telling you who you will send your blocks to. The first rotation will have a ship date of Jan 28th. We will then use this site to assign the additional rotations at intervals of 4-6 weeks.

Discussion

I've added some additional infomation about the process and the "defination of layers" to the swap info above. I encourage you all to use this discussion space to leave comments, ideas or questions for the rest of the group.

Hey Heather, Thanks for the information. After our conversation yesterday I am worried that I am putting too much in to the initial blocks. My Q. to the group: Are you guys just doing plain blocks, or are you adding a little jazz? Thanks!

magpie 01/ 8/2008 #

I think my first round blocks will be plain with a little added jazz.

I was thinking about doing some sort of color wash first, then selectively adding some sort of texture/patterning/collage to each block. I thought this would give a nice starting point without completely overwhelming the piece for the next few contributors.

Does this sound in line with what everyone else is doing?

Hi Dana (Magpie) I was going to take the same approach, adding a bit of something as a starting place to the "background" and but not steering it too much in one direction or the other. Thanks!

Also, I hope no no thinks these are 3-D blocks, they are just flat, thought I should clarify that just in case.

Please disregard your swap partners assigned to this swap and sign up for the Round 1 revised Collaborative block swap. Sorry about this folks but due to the way Swap bot manages these swaps I had no other way to fix this snaffu.
The revised swap has been entered and the new sign up date is Jan 19th, nothing else will change...Thanks!!!
