Please note: Mostly offline and taking a break from swaping for a bit as I'm having another hand surgery Oct 28. Please don't hesitate to PM if anything arises, especially with swaps I've hosted. I'll check in at least once a week. Best wishes, M.
Thirtysomething abstract painter (prof.), mixed media artist and polaroid/crappy camera/lomo enthusiast who just relocated from NYC to the pioneer valley. I adore modern art and architecture (including mid century modern), bookbinding, fine arts and crafts, traveling, peace & quiet (in short supply with a 2 year old), wit, collaborative art/mail art, irreverence and surprise.
My sketchbooks are covered with street/artist stickers I collected walking around the east village (and my favorite simply says "Polaroid lives".) I adore handmade books, wonderful papers, artful vegetarian sushi, thunderstorms, beautiful lights, weathered metal (silver and copper), letterpress, hand carving, printmaking, graphic design, unique, modern stationary, fountain and drawing pens, color in general (greens, blue-greens and celadon are favorites), drawing, roaming through museums and unfamiliar streets, solitude especially by the ocean, Paris, Provincetown, owls, pandas, skeletons (real ones that I draw from), playing mah jongg and sleeping with far too many pillows!
Too many to list...authors: Mary Oliver, Barbara Kingsolver, Diane Ackerman, Jhumpa Lahiri, Jeanette Winterson, Edwidge Danticat, Dorothy Allison, Alice Walker, Alison Smith, Amy Tan, bell hooks, Lucy Jane Bledsoe, Michael Cunningham, Laurie Notaro, Leslea Newman, Augusten Burroughs, Sarah MacDonald, Jennifer Leo, Sheri Tepper, Laura Adams, Nicola Griffith, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Ursula LeGuin, Joan Slonczewski, May Sarton, Rachel Naomi Remen, Jon Kabat Zinn, Mark Epstein, Arthur Frank, Arthur Kleinman, Keri Smith, Alison Bechdel, Danny Gregory, Kimon Nicolaides.... Post surgery reads--Octavia Butler (x2), Catherynne Valente, Barbara Ehrenreich, Chuck Close: Life, Stacey O'Brien (wonderful, easy read for an owl lover), Joe Fig (artists studios) and now Aimee Bender & Marcia Tucker
I don't have a plethora of time for TV these days but I enjoy Bones, Project Runway, LWord, Lost, news (esp international), The Colbert Report, John Stewart, Cities of the Underworld, Mythbusters, Nova, Planet Earth, The Awful Truth and Cake Boss. I listen to NPR in the studio. It's my way of catching up since my little one does leave much time for the Times anymore!
Love Actually, Born Into Brothels, What Dreams May Come, Monsoon Wedding, The Color Purple, Rabbit-Proof Fence, Whale Rider, Amelie, Bowling for Columbine
Paris (being there, not as a theme), Provincetown, NYC, Florence, any quiet, secluded place by the sea, library nooks, etsy, my studio (that perfect balance--at home but a separate building on our property--ahhhhh--I could almost go to work in my pajamas except they'd be paint covered)!
Painting, photography, drawing, mixed media (though I'm not really into collage), bookbinding, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry making (resin, metal work, just a bit of beading), zine making and sticker design. I love trying new hand crafts and making gifts and always appreciate handmade offerings from other artists!
I truly value quality over quantity and appreciate when senders exhibit care and thoughtfulness. Of course I'll do the same and will always send something that I would be delighted to receive or more importantly something that I think you will be delighted to receive!
Images of some of my swaps are on flickr. Apologies! I'm admittedly not good about uploading! (Last Flickr update 9 June.)
***I'm a reliable swapper so if something I've sent does not arrive please let me know asap so I can follow up as needed!
***Likewise, I generally rate the same day I receive a parcel. If you haven't received a rating but sent please do not hesitate to PM. I'd far rather hear from you than have you worry about your envie!
I use a PO Box because I now live rurally and I find it's the most reliable way to receive mail. Otherwise our lovely but older mail carrier walks our long drive with every package. (That's a lot to ask when you love and receive a good deal of mail art!) If you need my street address--no worries!--just contact me.
To be earth friendly I reuse packaging whenever possible even if it's not the prettiest option. I also share materials that, though I appreciate them, might be more suitable for another artist based on their profile/likes/wishes.
These are things I enjoy but it's certainly not a shopping list at all. I love handmade and collect a bunch of everyday (free) finds like fortunes, street stickers and those little sheets people draw on to try out markers and pencils!
hand drawn, painted, carved or screenprinted
photography
empty cartridges and dark slides from Fuji instax films (wide and mini)
empty cartridges and dark slides from Polaroid films (any)
a prioritaire or airmail/par avion etiquettes, labels, stickers or other postal fodder! (probably my biggest wish and they are generally free at the post office). Those from outside the US or vintage US labels are particularly appreciated.
first class or special delivery labels and stamps are lovely too
derivan liquid pencil (you really should try this wonderful media if you draw or paint! sadly none of our local stores have it)
japanese washi/masking tape--completely addicted...not picky at all about colors/styles
old envelopes that I can use/reuse
Polaroid/instant photo ephemera, bits, waste, dark slides, films/cartridges in any condition, ads, broken bits or camera pieces/parts
empty Fuji Instax cartridges (mini or wide)
scribble sheets found in stores (from trying out pens and markers)
artist/street stickers (yes, peeled off signs & posts) please help me cover my current sketchbook!
fabric/cotton/linen tapes that are plain--cream, black, really any solid color, any width
Japanese instant film sticky notes (I'd love to swap for these!)
Japanese pens and pencils (I love jetpens.com--everything from brush pens and great erasers to mechanical pencils, inks and leads)
I'm one of those geeky kids that loved heading to the stationary/office supply store for back-to-school shopping every August!
Art-o-mat pieces (which I can return in kind)
original art of any kind
anything handmade with care
zines!
anything Polaroid, Diana, "crappy camera" or lomo related including photos, goodies, expired film, tips or techniques!
interesting/unusual natural materials and finds-- found skeletons, leaves, shells, flat/thin or colorful stones, wood, cork, beach glass, heart shaped stones or shells
small handmade/bound books (especially enjoy those made with special papers or to suit a bit of wet media. I'm currently addicted to Twinrocker paper as well as Saunders Waterford but will work on anything, even copier paper!)
book binding instructions or a kit you've made
linen masking/adhesive tape, any width
mechanical pencils of any kind, Sakura Microns & glaze pens (white & black are favorites), copic (incl. SP multiliners & parts)
various matte natural, white and off white papers suitable for bookmaking, drawing, watercolor etc.
artist papers (any paper that you have "decorated" with your original art or images--painted, hand printed, marbled, handmade paper etc!)
NYC subway tokens, ephemera or non-touristy bits and pieces from NYC or abroad
I adore hand carvings! Anything mail, nature, owls, trees, clouds, ocean, koi, plants, mail art, air mail/par avion, abstract--honestly you couldn't disappoint me with a hand carved stamp, especially one based on your own drawing/art!
little wind up toys (plastic or metal)
Stabilo Tone/Woody
Sharpie water based paint markers (esp. white)
Moleskines (xsmall or small/pocket, unlined or squared, any type, any color) with your artwork or just mailed naked so it shows the bump and scuff of the journey!
handmade felt (esp. wool felt), crocheted or knit toys for my 2 1/2 year old (Please no buttons or embellishments that are choking hazards.) She loves mama and baby sets right now.
stickers for my little one--pretty much anything except super girly or teeny tiny stickers or coloring pages you've drawn. She adores animals, trains, moon/stars, Tinkerbell, Winnie the Pooh etc. She also loves mini books.
amigurumi--love them!
hand dyed linen thread for bookbinding (raw or waxed)
hand dyed silk cord and ribbon
plant dyed wool felt
naked mail (fun, fun, fun)
resin pieces, jewelry and resined papers
Elly Simmons--Sister, Peace, Muse, Curiosity (in any form) or Cliff McReynolds cards/pcs of animals in unusual environments
interesting/modern/wacky/irreverent printed tissues/kleenex
glass work
fortunes, fortune games, fortune cookies
test tubes with rubber or cork stoppers
green art materials, tips and artwork
(flower) gardening (natural/organic rather than chemical) resources, tips
unusual art materials or dry pigments from outside the US
small drawing pads and implements
little pads from outside the US (foreign text or just unusual graphics are great)
pencil cases
colorful, modern, address labels
new or used but older US postage (all are good! esp. seeking 15 cent US photography stamp, Noguchi stamps, graphic love stamps and anything honoring women)
original botanical and natural (animal) illustration (by you, not from a book! as for me I'm learning the nuances but enjoy it a great deal)
graphic design & modern illustration--anything!
modern pillows, art, re/upcycled pieces for the home (love unusual or graphic or turquoise)
boxes, pouches, tins
handmade postcards or photography postcards (send naked)
wood type "M"s numbers and alphabets (also hope to find a 1.5-2 in. "k")
favorite artists--Lee Bontecou, Mark Rothko, Paul Klee, KiKi Smith, Chuck Close, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jasper Johns
themes--cameras, abstract, mid-century modern, urban, clouds, waves, owls, wabi sabi, macro flowers, nature, seeds/pods, horizons, circles, hand drawn/painted, anything screen printed & so much more!
colors--turquoise! and other blue/greens, aqua, celadon, moss, analogous color schemes, earthy, bright modern, neutral (blacks whites, grays with a pop of color or not) etc. Honestly I like most colors except girly pink, bright primaries (or every darn color in one piece) and I'm not brown person--sepia yes but burnt umber everywhere just isn't my taste....
I do not scrapbook or use for stickers (except artist stickers) or commercial rubber stamps. Please don't waste them on me when others love them so!
Not favorites... pink, a lot of brown, girly, religious, cute, glittery, goth, horror, vintage (except I love vintage art/camera/film supplies and vintage art supply/camera ads), store bought stickers, rubber stamps, collage/found images, commercial decorated papers, conservative politics, beads, tourist/destination/non-profile related postcards, careless work, de-stash, dollar store, FBs/decos/slams/slips etc., candles, items that smell of cigarette smoke, have fragrance, contain leather (vegetarian), cosmetics or food (except chocolate--I do have quite a weakness for dark/bitter chocolate).
Please, please nothing with reptiles or the like. (I don't even like to talk about slithery things.) Ophidiophobia--ever since my sister chased me with them as a kid.
Due to metal allergies I can only wear sterling silver (PMC is fine). Please no base metal or plated pieces.
Thanks for your consideration. I'd always rather receive one thing I may love or a note from the sender than ten things thrown in a package.
