Description:

EDIT I changed the partner to 1 and 1 Dresden plate. I was hoping with 4 everyone would be able to make a mini wall hanging, but people aren't joining and the watchers are dropping off like flies...LOL! Took that as a hint that maybe my parameters were a little too ambitious. :)

I am really getting into the quilt patterns of yesteryear. This will be the first in a series of swaps for vintage geometric shape pieces. I'm so excited and I hope that you are too and will join! I am giving a generous amount of time to get it done, so it's not a rush, but really make sure you are committed. Especially, since this is an INTERNATIONAL swap. :)

For this swap:

*1 partners

*1 Dresden plate and separate center circle (Just the Dresden plate and center circle. Do not applique to background for blocks)

*Dresden plate should be minimum 6" across up to 12" (unless your partner and you agree on something else)

*Sender's choice for fabric (but you can keep your partner's preference in mind if you wish)

*Please use quality fabrics. It doesn't have to be quilt store expensive, just good quality. No cheap, loose weave, hard, dollar store fabric.

*** I do require have a rating of 5.0 and at least 5 snail mail rated swaps under your belt. If it is down to 4.5, I ask that you PM me with details of what you are doing or have done to resolve the lower ratings. I will remove those who are between 4.5-4.9 who do not PM me. And if anyone notices a chronic flaker who has signed up, please PM me and NOT add it to the comments. I want to keep it civil and respectful as much as possible, so the excitement and fun momentum is not broken! :) *** Here is a link from YouTube on how to make an easy dresden plate with the dresden ruler. But you can also make a template as well. No need to go out and buy a fancy ruler if you don't want to.

Can we post our size and color preferences here in the comments?

creativebebe 04/14/2010 #

absolutely! :)

I'm in! I make 12.5" blocks (for finished 12") so I'd love it if the "plate" will fit one that size fully.

Since this is such a varied color/print type block, if my partner can just avoid a combination that looks particularly pink or orange, I like just about all other colors, but especially blues, rich colors, primaries, and white based light prints rather than beige or ecru.

Here is a link to a pattern template for a 12" block. It's from the Quilter's Cache, a great site with lots of free patterns

ooh, thanks for putting up the template link! didn't think to look for other sources. :) "i'm so excited, and i just can't hide it, no more, no more, no more"

I would like to join this swap, I have been wanting to start a scrappy dresden plate quilt but I am worried that I wouldn't be able to make it exactly the right dimensions that my partner wanted. "Quilt math" is my downfall!

Also, I understand that we wouldn't applique it down on a background fabric but leave that to our partners to do but we also wouldn't put the center circle on either...right?

I am watching for now, I'll go practice and see what I come up with. :-)

creativebebe 04/15/2010 #

@Ky it is ultimately sender's choice. So the math does not have to be exact unless you want to be specific to your partner's wishes. Does anyone else know how to calculate the full circumference of a dresden plate based on the size of the pieces? Math is not my strong suite either! I'll research it though. As for the center, that is up to you. I am going to make large yo-yo circles for my partner to applique themselves. From what I can see, the applique of the center circle is done after the plate/flower is applique'd onto the background fabric. Does that help?

Here is a link for a freezer paper method in the exact size you want it!

Ack! I'm suddenly overwhelmed with stuff, including applying for a big new job. I have to drop out. I hope this runs again, maybe with only one partner. 4 is quite a lot of work.

Have fun!

creativebebe 04/21/2010 #

okay. i will change to 1 partner. lots of watchers dropping out too. good luck with the job hunt!

twobluecrows 04/23/2010 #

Thanks creativebebe--since it's only one, I think I can manage one more quilt block swap! The freezer paper method will make it very easy to figure the pieces.

I'm in again. :)

So if I am reading right... we make it to how we know how to? ALso color is up to the maker right? Do we attach it to a backing? I am waiting on something to come in the mail before I decide... wanting to join

creativebebe 04/28/2010 #

hi @busymoma4 yes, it is sender's choice, plate and middle circle only. no backing and circle is not attached. :) @twobluecrows ..thanks for staying! i'm excited to see 6 joined...this will be sooo much fun! :)

I have pieces cut out and I hope to get them together this weekend--at least I'll still have some time in case it totally doesn't work! I used a template from one of the links (I can't remember right now which one--but I want to try the freezer paper method, too--that's looks the best!
