Description:

This is a great swap for folks who love WHALES and HANDMADE items! For this swap you will be creating TWO handmade, whale-themed items for your partner-

  1. A fiber or fabric whale. Some ideas include (but are not limited to): a needlefelted whale figurine, a felt whale plushie, a hand-embroidered whale tea towel or patch, a canvas tote on which you have painted a cute little whale... the ideas are endless! I would encourage you to visit your partners profile to see if there's anything they'd like. For instance, if your partner is a tea lover, you might consider making a tea envelope with a little whale applique on it.

  2. A paper whale item. Some ideas: a set of whale stationary that you printed or stamped yourself, a detailed whale ATC, a handmade journal with a whale on the cover, a set of handmade whale scrapbooking embellishments. Again, please refer to your partners profile. So, if your partner doesn't do very much scrapbooking, you might consider not making anything scrapbook-related for them.

Please be sure that these items are "substantial". What I mean by that is that I encourage you to spend time on these items. Please do not just put a pre-made whale sticker on a piece of paper and call it done. The idea here is that you're the type of person who LOVES crafts and making things that are gift-worthy. If you do not enjoy spending time and effort into making good things, please do not join this swap.

This is a great opportunity to use up crafting supplies you already have... but if you must buy supplies, please try to keep it around $5. A great idea is if your partner appreciates vintage or thrifted things, you could embellish a thrifted item with whales (like add a handmade whale patch to a cute, good quality purse you thrifted for $1.00).

Please only send a package that you yourself would be overjoyed to receive. Make it pretty! Here's your chance to make a pretty package! Use up that cute wrapping paper you've been hoarding in the closet! Use some of that old lace to make a pretty bow! Have fun!

Little extras in the package are encouraged (but not required).

Too keep postage down, I am making this a US-only swap but if there's someone who would like to do an international version depending on interest that's lovely!

Newbies are welcome with VERY detailed profiles. I will remove anyone from this swap who appears suspicious.

Any questions, just ask! I am a full-time crafter (as in, I do this kind of thing for a J.O.B.) so I have lots of ideas if you need help! And, I am angeling this swap... but please... I beg you.... don't flake!

Happy creating and happy swapping!

xoxo

Great swap idea. On my watchlist for now. :)

cries I love whales... but I can't sew to save my life.

SoSheSews 05/12/2010 #

@KristinaLynn

No sewing required! One idea for the fabric item for the sewing-challenged is to find something that is fabric which is already made (a tote bag, a t-shirt, a wine tote, a tea towel, etc.) and use fabric paint pens to draw or paint a whale on. I thought about that... but one can always paint onto fabric! :)

I LOVE orca whales! So this swap is on my watchlist :)

What if we wanted to do two fabric whale items? I'm really bad with paper-related things and my area of expertise is sewing and embroidery.

SoSheSews 05/14/2010 #

@csjoyeuxnoel

Well, I suppose you could contact your partner to see if they'd be OK with that. One option for you, though, is to create small sewn whale patches and then literally sew them onto cards or stationary. I do this all the time since I'm a seamstress my friends expect my cards to them to include sewn touches. I did this once with felt that I embroidered and cut into a layered (but flat) shape of an owl and I even included large buttons for eyes. Then I used my sewing machine to attach the felt owl to the card...regular cardstock sews right through just like fabric :).

I am a newbie, participating in a few swaps. Are newbies allowed? I have collected whales for years, would love to join this swap.

SoSheSews 05/15/2010 #

@RockyMtns

Yes, newbies are allowed with a well-filled out profile :). Be sure to at least list a few of your likes and dislikes in your profile so your partner can choose good whale items for you.

KristinaLynn 05/17/2010 #

@SoSheSews - Thank you, but I really don't want to just slap an applique onto something and I'm not very good with fabric paints (I get frustrated that the fabric never stays very flat lol).

Really, I'm good at drawing and watercolor and collage. Oh and I make jewelry as well, on occasion :)

PS - I love the little owl pouches in your shop! And the Whale wristlet! want, want want!

I'm so excited for this. :D

This is my first swap, but I promise I have some great ideas for my partner!

sushidays 05/20/2010 #

I must like whales, because the last three things I've bought have been a shirt with whales, a whale pillow, and a whale book. I'm excited about this swap :]

I'm super excited to get started! Will partners be assigned soon? I want to look at their profile before I start sewing so I make sure and use colors they like.

Hi everyone!

Sorry for being absent a few days there... as many of you may know, I'm a full-time crafter and last weekend I was out of town for a big ole festival :). I'm assigning your partners right now! Happy swapping!

Again, I just want to re-iterate, if anyone is having any trouble coming up with idea for their partners whale items, just shoot me a message and I may be able to help :)... I've got loads of ideas!

xoxo
